Blue Weimaraners

I wanted to post some pics here of a "Blue Weimaraner". Also, please read my thread on breed creation as I really would like some feedback. The link to that thread is: http://www.globalpaw.com/showthread....3&page=2&pp=15 (New Breed Creation, not necessarily designer dogs...)

Please read post #16 as I think I finally stated sensibly what I would like feedback and debate on.

Male Blue Weimaraner

Female Blue Weimaraner

Puppy Blue Weimaraner

Litter of Weimaraners, Blue and Gray

I think the blues are absolutely precious! I wonder why they were excluded from the standard?

There are a few different thoughts.

1) That the color originated because they were outcrossed with another breed. It's been proven that it is a genetic mutation that has happened spontaneously in 3 recorded litters of two Gray parents. However many people still think of the blues as throwbacks. The blue gene is dominant, and so any blue that had one gray parent that is bred to a gray will produce some grays and some blues. A blue bred to another blue will produce only blue pups, and a 2 grays bred will always produce grays, the exception being the above mentioned 3 recorded litters.

2) Many people say the blues were taken out of the standard because they kept beating their gray competitors in the show ring. Like I said, they've only been disqualified from the show ring. They can still compete in AKC field trials, hunt tests, agility, obedience, etc.

3) There was a huge fight amongst the club when they were being voted on to be disqualified. Some breeders had spent their lives perfecting the blue. Removing them from the ring, but not barring them from registration may have been a compromise.

Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation.

No problem. Laney has brought me to seek out knowledge about these dogs. I love Weims, and in all ways but one, I consider Laney a Weim. I don't think however that they should be considered Weims, and think they should be removed completely from the standard and the registry, but... I also don't want to see them cease to exist. I was wondering if a new breed would be a solution, or if there is another solution out there that I'm just not seeing.
It's not like they were just disqualified, it's been 30+ years. If a new breed was the answer, you'd think someone would have done it by now, but maybe not, because it would be an incredible amount of work to be done correctly and you may have more detractors than encouragers.

I think they're precious too. As striking as the Weims are, I always get more compliments on Laney, even though she's ugly as sin, but she makes an impression wherever she goes!

I have a page I wrote up too on the blues, that may offer more insight into the problem. This is the link here.

Wow! I will be honest and say that I didn't know blue Weims even existed. Other than the coat color, are they any different than the grays? Any other health problems associated with that coat color? Yes, you have me curious about the blues now.

I just had a look in your album, are you sure these are weimys? They sure looks like blue dobes, didn't know weims had tan markings.

Nope, they are no different than their gray littermates. In fact some would say they tend to be healthier. The blue coat gene is dominant and is very easy to control in a litter.

Please read my thread on New Breed Creation in the Debate section. I've posted lots and lots of info on the Blues.

Weims are not supposed to have these markings. These are called "Mark of the Hound" and is a recessive trait that shows up in a litter very infrequently.

These pups should not be bred. The Weimaraner standard calls for a medium sized, short-coated, gray dog.
