Here ya' go:
"Saint Bernards have generally dominated the heavyweight class and the all-time record (5,220 pounds) of Susitna, a Saint Bernard has not been challenged in several decades. Frank, a Husky-mix, who weighs less than 50 pounds pleased the crowds for many years and currently holds the pound for pound record of 49 times his body weight. He is reputed to have won his handler over $30,000 during his weight pulling career! " Infor obtained from this link: http://alaskansaint.com/World%20Championship.htm |

The APBT enjoys doing anything their handlers ask them to do. It is in their nature to want to please their people. The pulling is just another outlet for their sheer tenacity and determination. A dog that does not want to pull, Won't!! APBT's and other breeds active in the sport (American Bulldogs, Huskies, Malamutes, Saint Bernards, and even Shih Tzus just to name a few) are never put in harm's way. If the dog cannot pull the weight, the people that are handling the cart (making sure it stays on its tracks, or moves straight) will push the cart for the dog so that it feels accomplished, and it never "loses."
Please do not pass judgement before you actually witness a weight pull. The dogs are revved up and LOVE what they are doing. |

First off great pictures pippin. Thank you.
Second I promissed a friend I would be nice, seeing as how a have a big mouth. And last I have a Beagle Im going to try and make the worlds strongest beagle in pulls. So, I may be a little one sided. *JackLover* Anyhow, I see this post was started yesterday and yesterday you said, you didnt even know there was weight pulling. So, many people around here have known of this for years, and trust me if they knew it would hurt a dog they would tell you. There are tons of dogs that dont do what they were bred to do umpteen hundred years ago. Would you send your Jack R. down a dirty hole to get a rabies infested rat? Nope, it may hurt it. An ABD hanging or pulling is much safer then Bull baiting. And there are many dogs out there that were bred for 100s of years maybe more to pull, hike, and carry packs on there back. At first look weight pulling may seem hard on the dog, but trust me we all have dogs and there is one thing we know, if the dog dont want to do it, it aint. I do not know if you have ever been to a dog protection class, but at first look that can look a little ruff on the dogs also, but there driven to do it by the end. There is a fine line you walk with any dog sport even if it is something like flyball, if you have a good trainer and you are your dogs right hand, you would be shocked what they would do for you. With weight pulling there are many steps you have to follow in order to keep your dog healthy and driven, it is not just put 500 pounds on its back and go. There dogs are trained for along time starting with just wearing the harness and pulling a milk jug of rocks. In the mean time they are on a great diet and tons of exercise and love. Sometimes it takes years to get to there top level and most do not start till 16 months old. You have to let a dog fully grow first. And then there are thoughs that will not do it, and 85% of the dogs owners know this and pull then out. A good house pet is better then no pet. Take some time and look around the net. I think you will find that this is a big sport with even a bigger fan base. You might even like it. Dave. |

surely there's ways of exercising a dog without giving them arthritis when they are older, I'm sorry but It's never going to be something that I agree in!

As for other ways of excercising their are other ways, but this is a sport that is fun, for both human and dog. It also lets the dogs use their natural strength for something positive. |

As far as "arthritis" goes. Does your Jack R jump off of chairs? Does he sleep on tile or wood floors? Does he jump for food, or balls when you take him out playing? At what age did you let him start going up and down stairs, or jump from your chairs? Because all these things can lead to "arthritis". Did you get your dog from a good breeder? Does he come from a line of dogs with good hips? Does your dog get good exercise? Is he on a good diet? Because all these things can lead to "arthritis". England is the home of "ruff" dog sports. Research. Dave. |

I think your attitude needs looking at, I am allowed to not agree in something If I wish, i am sure that there are things that you don't believe in. Then to say England is the home of Ruff dog sports, is just insulting. Please think before posting!!!!!!!!!!

Okay now kiddies... let's play nice in the sand box
![]() Take a deep breath... and smile LOLJackLover prefers not to take part in this sport, nor does she care for it, which is fine. Many people don't see a point to it. It's just like people who don't agree with grey hound racing as well as sledding. Seeing that they own smaller breeds (but just got a pretty boxer ), It's understandable. And now... back to the subject!! ![]() I believe there is a record for an APBT or ST... let me go get my magazine and check. I'll be right back |

Weight pulling can be done safely and not harm the dog as long as it is done correctly. Sure, a dog may end up with some sort of joint, hip, or bone problem in the future, but just because one dog gets it doesn't mean the entire group of dogs that do compete get it.
If you keep your dog healthy, on a good diet, good body build (exercising the dog and warming up before an event), and probably a good check at the vets before each competition. It can be a very safe and fun sport. It's not for everyone, but if you go to one (which I haven't been to one only seen picture but am still amazed) you can see how eager the dogs are to get right up there for their turn. I could only imagine the dogs barking and yanking at the leash to get up and go! |

Unfortantly I cant say whats on my mind, Ill get kicked. But, Europe as a hole is harder on there dogs and have been more demanding on there dogs over time pasts. *Lets look at some facts* 1) Schutzhund 2) Bull baiting 3) Pit fighting. In Russia they fight these dogs like we race Gray hounds. There is no law on it. 4) Beagles and fox running. 5) Just about every working dog in the world was bred in Europe, to do some of the most physical work imaginable. I would have to say that over times past Europe has depended on dogs much more the the USA. Quote:
