Angry Maltese, Poodles, Yorkies, Poms, Pekes, Doxies--$100 auction!

This just in from Souther Comfort Maltese Rescue by way of Small Paws Rescue (Bichon rescue): This Saturday, April 28, 2006 at 10:00 a.m., in Bartow County GA, 204 small breed dogs (from a puppy mill who's owner recently passed away) will be auctioned off (minimum bid is $100). This is done by order of the county's probate court to help pay for the care of the dogs. There are Maltese, Poodles, Yorkies, Poms, Pekes, and mayby Dachshunds. There is concern about this auction because aparantly some puppy millers have been inquiring about purchase. These dogs are not up for adoption--the only way to get them is to bid. THESE DOGS HAVE NOT BEEN SPAY/NEUTERED, and may end up back in the puppy mill cycle.

The auction will take place in the parking lot of the Bartow County Animal Control, 50 Ladd's Mountain Rd. Cartersville, GA. If you can make a donation to help Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue, here is a link to their donation page: http://www.scmradoption.com/donate.htm. Also, Christine Cox of the Georgia Legal Professionals for Animals (http://www.georgialpa.org/) is raising funds to buy as many of these dogs as possible. Please pass the word to rescue groups!

That is really sad and I have heard of things like that before but mostly with live stock and horses. I remember watching something on animal cops Houston when one of the agents was going to an auction to save as many horses as they could that were going to be slaughtered for horse meat . Somehow it is legal to do this and I just can't believe it. I hope more breed rescues get involved to help and I will see if I can donate something. Good Luck!

All the more reason our dogs should be spayed and neutered just in case they end up in a milliers back yard in cages for life. What the hell is wrong with some people anyway. Will this madness ever end?

OMG that's horrible!! Thankyou so much for posting this I hope you get the help you need.
Good gods, people can be just despicable sometimes. No wonder we all like dogs more than people.

Cass.

One more example of insane court rulings. I hope the rescue groups are successful in keeping them out of the hands of other puppy mills!

This is horrable yet not illigal ; I wish things like this were made illigal tho. I hope they succed and raise enough to buy more then 10. I know on one puppy mill site an undercover rescue worker/cordnater went in and was only able to afford , I believe, 5 dogs... They were bad off and needed some vet care. I actually seen an ad about a mill aucton, on all the dogs discriptions all I seen was this " good breeder" - "eager to breed"(males) - "produces large litters",etc- its very sad that these people think nothing of these animals care, health, or any thing. Its heart breaking.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND DONATIONS FOR THIS RESCUE TO SMALL PAWS RESCUE, BUT RATHER TO
SOUTHERN COMFORT MALTESE RESCUE IN TENNESSEE.

Thursday April 27, 2006

Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to the newest members of our online mailing list, especially if you have seen us featured in one of our recent media articles , read about us in the best selling book "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul", or if you saw Small Paws on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams!

Small Pawsers everywhere welcome you with open arms! We sincerely hope that you enjoy "Small Pawsing and reading Small Paws!"

If you are new to Small Pawsing, this may look as if it is coming only to you but really it is going out to fellow Small Pawsers all across our country and in 20 foreign countries as well!

Adoption information is posted below. Turn up your speakers!
We have music for you!

This is a special edition of the Small Paws Rescue newsletter.

As you know, Small Paws rescues Bichons and Bichon mixes.

There are 40 dogs needing help, who are of another Canine Persuasion...they are Maltese.

Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue needs help ASAP...and we admire what they are trying to do, and we are going to help them to get the word out about a horrible situation happening on in Bartow County, Georgia THIS COMING SATURDAY.

If you are a Maltese Mom or Dad, or if you know a Maltese...or if you know a Maltese lover....read up. This is most urgent.

It seems that a backyard breeder passed away in Ga. Their 204 small breed dogs were taken to a local shelter. There are no Bichons. There are Maltese, Yorkies, Chihuahua, Poms, Pekes and possibly Dachshunds.

A judge, yes an educated human being, has decided in all of his infinite wisdom, that the best way for them to decide who will get these dogs...dogs that have been in RESCUE AT A SHELTER....is to auction them off to the highest bidder in the shelter parking lot. Yes, you read this correctly.

These are unaltered dogs, and the puppy millers will be out in force. Many of them are older dogs. Some of these Maltese are pregnant and some are in horrible shape. Sadly, we already know about this, don't we?

The minimum bid will be $100.00.

There are 40 some odd Maltese that have been safe in rescue..and now they are faced with being returned to a milling situation. GOD FORBID.

Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue,. which is located in Tennessee, needs help to get these dogs out of the puppy milling system, and back into rescue where they should be!

THIS is how to help them if you can. They need funds to buy Maltese, and funds to vet them.

This is more about this auction...Lord help us. Now the Judges are joining the puppy mills in auctioning dogs off like cattle and sheep. Lovely. Just Lovely.

"As some of you may know, Bartow County Animal Control is doing an auction this Saturday at which they plan to sell 204 dogs that were impounded recently after a backyard breeder passed away. Such auctions are permitted under the Bartow County ordinances, and many other puppy mills are anxious to purchase these dogs. I am planning to circulate the e-mail I've pasted below to various small breed rescue groups. If you are so inclined, please personalize and forward this e-mail to any and all rescue groups that you know. It would be great if we could keep these dogs from ending up in the wrong hands...
Thanks!
Christine

Dear (Rescue Group),
I am a volunteer with Georgia Legal Professionals for Animals and am writing to ask for your assistance with a situation in Bartow County, Georgia. About a month ago, the owner of a notorious puppy mill passed away, leaving 204 small breed dogs, including Maltese, Poodles, Yorkies, Pomeranians, Pekingese, and possibly Dachshunds. Bartow County Animal Control is conducting an auction this Saturday, April 28, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. The dogs will be sold for $100 minimum per animal, with the oldest dogs being sold first.
We are very concerned about this situation because other disreputable breeders have been inquiring about purchasing the dogs, and we fear that they will be returned to the same life of misery they endured before. The dogs are not up for adoption, and the only way to obtain a dog is through the auction process on Saturday. There is nothing we can do on the legal front to rescue these dogs because the Bartow County ordinances permit auctions of dogs that are impounded by Animal Control.
Please consider purchasing some of these dogs as part of your rescue efforts. Some are pregnant, and many are in terrible shape. Anything you could do to help with this situation would be greatly appreciated. If you need for someone to serve as your proxy in purchasing the dogs, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Christine Cox

I called the Animal Shelter to confirm and it was announced in their local paper. The shelter is not involved in the actual auction--they are providing the parking lot for it to take place (which totally sends the wrong message). There are 40 puppies and 165 adults ranging in ages 3 to 10. The auction is being run by the Probate Court and the money goes to the estate to "pay for caring for the dogs." There is a $100 minimum and am still not sure what happens to dogs who receive no bids--someone sent in an email that they would be offered to rescues but that is not confirmed. There are Maltese, Yorkies, Chihuahua, Poms, and Pekes. Melissa said she would get as many Maltese out as she could but their funds are limited and so are their fosters. Of course, since this is all a little different we really just don't know what to expect and the notice is so short. The dogs will supposedly come with documentation from a vet that they are up to date on vaccinations. Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue is a 501(c) and their web site is scmradoption.com.>

Ok, let's show our Maltese friends...how we can get the word out to help them to save these precious Maltese! Please crosspost this far and wide.

This is all of the information I have. We are praying for all of these small dogs...who are being aucitoned off like cattle this Saturday. And I'm also praying for that judge. It would appear that he needs prayer. All My Love, Robin
