On the other side of the door
Most of you see the dogs that are healthy and happy in their foster homes when you go to pet finder or any other adoption board looking for a new companion. But consider the other side of the door for a moment. The rescue people who take in the dogs that are starved, beaten or just plain neglected.
Case in point is litttle Teddy who just arrived in sheltie rescue on Monday. He was so covered with yeast infection and sarcoptic mange that he had to be rushed to the vets office before he went anywhere else. He is one of the lucky ones, his ills are all physical and can be cured with a little medication and care.... But seeing these poor dogs from our side of the door may make you understand why we can't quit.... ![]() Please support your local rescue organizations they need all the help they can get...... |

Awww, that is aweful!
Hope he gets better soon, and glad in this case it's something that can be fixed fairly easily. You are right, some aren't so lucky, although it's almost sick to consider him "lucky". Poor guy! |

I have fostered a few dogs and it was the hardest thing I ever did that I would definately do again. A lot of people don't realize how much work is involved with fostering. I had four puppies with parvo and ended up loosing all but two of them. I had fought so hard to keep those puppies going that it was really tough to give them up to their new forever homes. So much time and love goes into fostering that it most definately deserves all of the thanks and appretiation in the world.

to foster "parents".I think very few people realize that animals are not human, but they are not continually 'clean' slates. Previous owners can and often have done horrendous damage that causes long term effects. Malnourishment, poor socializing, poor diet, lack of vet care, horrible living conditions, physical abuse, negligence, and just total human idiocy. Most of us know too well, from threads here to personal encounters, the idea that you can 'buy' a 'ready made' 'family member' and somehow 'magically' they will be just like the dog they look like in that movie we all liked so much......an unfortunate belief that permeates too much of our society (on MANY things, not just animals..ie pill to lose weight, buying this such and such makes you prettier, etc) Abuse leave scars deeper than that on the skin. Shelters, rescues, fosters...are just a link in the chain...able to begin the healing process.. so, again to you who have found the heart and will to step into these animals lives at the low point and find joy--for them and for yourselves--in those moments. The future adoptive parents of that dog may not realize just how truly lucky they were you were there. |
