When I came home from work yesterday I checked my answering machine first thing like always, each time I do I dread what I might hear and if you've ever been involved in rescue you know exactly what I mean. Each day I check the machine and don't have a message from a shelter notifying me that they have another bulldog in or an owner who wants to "turn their dog in" I thank the stars above.
Yesterday wasn't one of those days, sure enough a message from a local shelter telling me that had an owner surrender and would I be able to take in "just one more?" I called the shelter back and yep, a five year old male bulldog had been surrendered by his owners, why I asked, the answer, the owners felt he was too old and wanted a new puppy. I won't even go into how angry this makes me or we'd be here all day or how much I hurt for that poor five year old who did nothing to deserve this other than give his love and devotion to his so called family. Today I'll be headed for the shelter to evalute this new homeless bully and with luck he'll be just as the shelter told me, a kind and loving adult with no problem other than an eye infection and the unfortunate fact that his family is selfish and obviously incapable of true love. Providing the evaluation goes well he'll come home with me and we'll begin the process of finding a new forever home. This won't be an easy road, I unfortunatly have one of my own bulldogs who is terminally ill and a very low immune system which makes it impossible for this new bully to stay with me through his foster time. Due to this, he'll have to spend the night with me and then be transported into Ohio where I'll be handing him over to another rescuer, she will be keeping him then for at least a week to be evaluated, futher vet checked and he'll then move on to another home close to the PA line where he'll finally meet his new foster mother. It angers me even more that not only does this poor bully lose the only home he's ever known but now he'll unfortunatly be tossed and tumbled through two states before landing in foster care but unfortunatly there isn't anything I can do about that and it beats taking his chances in a high kill shelter where his chances of being adopted would have been slim to zero. This new rescue is but one of hundreds of dogs that go through the very same thing every day but their the lucky ones. What about those that are surrendered or found as strays that aren't lucky enough to have a rescue involved? If your looking for a new pet please consider adoption, there are hundreds of thousands of animals just waiting for that second chance at life....won't you open your heart and home to them? They didn't ask to be unloved and unwanted. Have a love for animals and want to get involved? Thousands of rescues and shelters are looking for volunteers, they can't do it alone and need your help to make that dream of a new forever home come true. Unable to foster a dog, don't have the time to volunteer but still want to help? Most rescue and shelters and non-profit or are working with a very small budget and would be thrilled to have donations. Did you know that just a ten dollar donation can provide medication for a sick animal or feed a dog for several days? Help me help them, get involved and help give those animals a second chance! ![]() |

I feel so sorry for that dog...
I wouldn't DREAM about giving up Blackie or Rose even though they are no longer puppies. (Rose is 6 and Blackie is 9.) Kind of makes you think what kind of people they are. "We just want a puppy but then when it's not cute and cuddly anymore we are going to dump it." Grrrrrr...... that ticks me off.... ![]() |

That makes me so angry to read that. It reminds me of where I grew up. So many people would get puppies, and then when the dogs grew up and were no longer cute and cuddly, the owners would just dump the dog off on a back road somewhere. And where I lived, it was open country with mountains. So, a majority of the time, the dogs would get hit by a car or would get shot by people who didn't want them on their land. And at the time, the animal shelter was so small and few people were adopting pets, that most of the dogs that came in were pts.
My family and I even caught a couple dumping their dog off on our road and my dad ripped them a new one for it. Unfortunately, a couple days later, the dog was found dead at the end of the road, because it wandered out onto the highway and got hit by a car. Some of the dogs even got eaten by bears. Luckily though, for the most part, attitudes have changed there and the animal shelter has gotten much bigger and better. So, fewer animals are running around as strays and the shelter isn't running over with unwanted animals. They have even had to bring in animals from Denver shelters , because they ran out of pets to adopt. ![]() |

I want him
man if I had my house now, rather then in 6 months id take him this second. Stories like this will be what ill use to convince my fiance that we should rescue a bulldog, rather then go to a breeder for ours. (though I have a feeling that when it come to Bulldogs well end up having a few) |

Poor thing! Some people are so cold. Dogs arent living, feeling beings to them, just a THING to have til they get tired of it. Awhile back I went to the shelter to pick up a pom to foster, and I saw a beautiful female english bully there. Picked up as a stray. I fell in love LOL but there was a lady there that had her name first on the list to adopt her. The shelter people said she went there every day that bully was there, to be with her. She had two other bulldogs at home. I met her and she seemed wonderful, I hope she was able to give that beautiful sweet bully a permanent home. We don't see many of those dogs around here, heck I hardly ever see a flat faced breed here of any sort. I check the shelter's website every day though - that place was where I first met Bentley, my black pug.
Want to say thanks.. thank you for helping that dog. Thank you for helping like you do. |

GRR
I am BIG on adopting and rescuing, all three of my girls are rescues, and I would never even dream of abandoning them just because they aren't little squirming puppies anymore. May is nine, Colby is seven and Tippy is 5 1/2. If I could, believe me I would take that dog any day! I really want to get a few acres and have 10 or 11 dogs. I've got everything planned out for a sanctuary, too, LOL.There are millions of animals dying every day and yet people still buy that little $500 puppy from the pet shop. But when that puppy starts to age, they figure he is no good, so they abandon him, whether it be on the side of a road, at a shelter or rescue, in the middle of the woods......or they may even have that once-a-puppy put to sleep. And what will they do after that? They'll be walking past the pet shop, when they see a little puppy face in the window.....out come the dollar bills. What's five hundred for a sickly pup? |

Hey Crossfire, does the rescue orginization you work/volenteer at have a website? If so, could you give it to me? I've been trying to convince my mom to let me get another dog or a Ferret and when I told her about the Bulldogs and how they aren't real active she said, "That's the dog for us!" So, maybe I could get her convinced to let me adopt one from that organization.

Just an update on the shelter bully......he made every leg of the trip with ease and is now resting at his new foster mother's home. He's a darling boy, very well behaved and should find a new forever home without much trouble.
