"Nothing is ever easy"
|
I really want to rescue a Boxer (or a Pittie mix), but I don't know if now is the best time to do it. Here are a couple of questions that I have about if I should be searching for a dog or not, and if so, what I should be looking for:
1. We will be getting a Leader dog puppy in about a year. I don't want two puppies in the house at the same time (I'd go crazy Besides, I don't think it is allowed by the orginization.) so what would be the youngest age that I could adopt? When do Boxers stop acting like puppies (maybe that is the wrong word...Boxers always act like puppies! lol) and settle down a bit? (I'm thinking around 3 or 4?) 2. Since we are getting the Leader dog puppy, and it won't be spayed, would it be best to find a female dog or would a male be find with another unnuetered male in the house? 3. And with all of that said, do you think I should just bag the idea of rescuing a dog at the moment and wait a while? Or do you think a Leader Dog puppy and an older Boxer would work out ok? Thanks for all of your help! |

If you're planning on having another dog in the house I would go with a Boxer over a Pit Bull X Though Pits are very sweet to humans and are usually very docile and pain tolerant with children, they are dog aggressive and no amount of training can over come that since it is what they were bred to be. I'm not saying this is always the case but it is the majority. Sometimes they won';t even show any aggression towards another dog until later on but the problem is thatpits are very "driven". Once they start at a task they continue until the task is accomplished. This is what makes them so great for weight pulling (along with their strength), and search and rescue.
Boxers are very human and dog friendly for the most part so you'd have better luck with one of them. Perhaps you could rescue a 3 or 4year old Boxer so that when the puppy comes he is still very playful, but not completly Boxer-puppy crazy. If you know you're getting a male puppy from the Leader Dog Association then Iw ould get a female Boxer because on average, opposite sexes get along better than same sexes. This is because there is always a male and a female of each pack position (Male and Female Alpha, Mael And Female Beta, Male and Female Omega etc) so it is easier for them to be on a neutral position with eachother where as two males or two female would fight to make sure one is Alpha and one is Beta. Remember though, this is just on AVERAGE I'm not saying this is the case in alls ituations. Many same sex dogs get along fine in a house hold, Heck OC and Ronin are both males and they get along splendidly and are yet to get into a fight. Cheers! |

I think I would wait to get any dog (I know how hard that is), especially a rescue, until after the Leader puppy has come and gone. Rescued dogs can come with their own set of unique problems that need lots of attention. You will want to be able to give most of your attention to raising a Leader puppy. You could use the "dogless year" to take your time in deciding what kind of dog is really best for you.

Over the past year (and even before that) I've been doing reserch on what seems like every dog imaginable. After much reserching, I've decided that the Boxer fits my (and my families) requirements the best. If I did get a Boxer, I would make sure that it is good with kids, other dogs, and cats. And I'm not to concerned about having a Boxer and a Leader Dog puppy at the same time, because my 9yr old brother, Wesley, has been wanting a dog for a LONG time and would love to help me out with them. (I think he is the only 9yr old that actually knows that Pitties aren't evil, it is the owner that makes dogs bad, not the dogs, that just because a dog is cute, doesn't mean it is a good dog [and vise-versa], and what Puppy Mills and BYBs are. lol )DarknessDivine- Howdy ! lol Man that snow was crazy.....our dogs had fun in it, but MAN was it ever cold......It is 'warm' now though....a whopping 40 deg.F!! lol I'll take a look at that website...P.S. I was looking on PetFinder and there was an ADORABLE male, white Boxer that was deaf. He wouldn't work though, because he required a fenced in yard and he was a baby. But man was that dog cute! lol |

In answer to your question about weather or not to get a male or female........heres my input because I've been threw it........
If you currently have a male - get a femle - do not get another male because they will fight!!! Weather one is neautered or not, they will still fight...........I have 2 males right now - father and son.......we neautered the father because of the fighting - but, it hasn't stopped it 100%, their alot better, but we still have to watch them, and we never leave the house without putting them in their kennel's....its for safety reason's......... Now, I use to have 2 females..........mother and daughter........and they were fine..........very loving with eachother - so........but thats not to say that they wouldn't have gotten into a fight..........but I did have a Shepherd and an Irish Setter, both females.........they got alot just fine, until mealtime.........and always at my feet!!! It scares the hell out of ya!!! So, this is just my take on having the same sex dog's......some was good - and others bad............ |

I currently have 2 male boxers. They have spats but they get along all in all. If you were to get 2 males/females I would monitor them closely. When we leave both dogs are left in the same room, they usually sleep the entire time we are gone so we don't have any problems.
They share the same food/water bowls. I think it all depends on the dogs..each one is so different... ![]() |

If/when I do rescue a dog, it will most likely be a female. That is because we currently own a male (Blackie) and a female (Rose). Rose gets along well with other dogs no matter what their gender, but Blackie has a thing for male dogs. (I think that has something to do that we didn't neuter him till he was around 3.)
When we get the leader dog puppy and it is a male, we are pretty much going to keep Blackie and the puppy seperated at all times unless Blackie gets used to it and then he would only be alowed around it under close supervision. Blackie gets along fine with female dogs though. (I don't think Blackie has ever been around a male dog before that hasn't tried to get in a fight with him, too. But he is around female dogs a lot.) I would keep a very close eye on them though, untill they are used to each other. But I don't think I would ever leave Blackie alone with another dog other than Rose, no matter how much they get along. |

In a shelter near here, there is a BEAUTIFUL, male, adult, pure white Boxer. His ears and tail are both natrual but he is awsome. The only thing about him that is wrong is he is deaf. What are your oppinions on adopting a deaf dog? How hard is it to live with them? (They said he got an A- on his temperment test and was a joy to have around. I just don't know how easy it would be to live with a deaf dog.)
P.S. His name is Artie. And how do you post his picture the website he is at without having to type the whole intire website bar thingy? And how do you post his picture? |

Hi Ritz,
I've had several deaf rescues over the years and found them equally as loving and wonderful to have around as their hearing brothers and sisters. It can be difficult at first to adjust from doing things verbally to hand signals for humans and dog alike but both pick up on it amazingly fast. Deaf dogs are no different than their hearing counterparts, when it comes down to it, its simply a different method of training involved and one that can be accomplished if your patient and devoted. ![]() I almost forget.... Once it's there, right click on the picture again and at the very bottom of the box your see one labled as "Properties" then highlight and right click again in that box where it says "Address or URL". Now make your post here with whatever wording you'd like to go with it then click on the box above the area where you type for your post, look for the little yellow envelope or some refer to it as a postcard with a stamp looking tab, click it and a small box will appear above in the top left corner of your computer screen with an area you can type in, click once and you'll see the curser, right click and click again to "Paste". Then look at the right side of the box you just copied the picture address in and click on ok. You should now have the complete address of your picture in your post in the proper format and can complete your post. A little long and wordy but hopefully it makes sense to you. If not feel free to send me a PM and we can go through it step by step. |
