Wow sounds like you and Persy are doing great with agility!

I'm hoping to get River into it this year (will be my first time ever doing agility!!) I'm sure I'll have lots of questions once we start!

Actually, I DO have a question for you Persy....What is a good age to start agility? I'd really like to get my Trixie started on that...she's 12 weeks right now, and still really clumsy. But she absolutely LOVES to run and jump, even though it usually ends up in a tumblesault! For a BC mix, she is not very graceful

Hi I am located in SE Pa and also do agility, have been competing for 10 yrs just recently got my 3rd bc and future agility star Whim :O). Since your baby is only 12 weeks (mine just went 13 wks) you have plenty of time before you start formal training. Let your baby be just that a baby for a while yet. Work on bonding, basic obedience, ie down, sit, stay, come ect. You can work on lots of little things like a "look" command, directionals ie turn left, turn right, walking on boards that move under them by making a "Buja Board" which is simply a 3 x 3 square of 1/4 to 1/2 inch plywood with 1/2 a ball (a tennis ball is fine) glued to the middle of the underside. The pup can walk over it and get use to something moving under his/her feet. Work on quick, sits and downs. NO repetative jumping at all until at least 8 mos old and no weaving until about 1 yr old. Both of these activites stress young joints and growth plates and can have severe reprecussions later. You can also purchase a kids tunnel from Toys R US to train tunnels. You might want to see if any groups in your area offer a puppy kindergarten for socialization with other dogs and people. Let me know where in NE Pa you are located and I will try and point you to a club in your area for future training. Any other questions please feel free to drop me a line and I will try to help you or point you in the right direction for an answer if I dont have one.

geez....must be nice to have so many options! I did find a place only 1 hour from my house....but I don't know if it's any good. It's called Loyalville K9. I have an email into the owner, but haven't heard back yet. There is also one called K9 Korner, but they seemed like real dingbats. They told me I could start her now, but I'm taking Agile's advice and waiting a few more months.

Please be aware that I know nothing of the reputation of alot of these clubs and/or instructors as I have not trained under them. I recommend that anyone looking to train for agility contact the club/instructor and ask to monitor a class or two. Here are a few things you might want to ask about when visiting a perspective instuctor

1) How long in agility?
2) What is their own goal in agility
3) how many and what types of dogs have they trained/handled personally? Ie: someone with a herding breed handles and trains differently than a scent hound they should have some knowledge of the strenghths and weaknesses of the types of dogs they are training.
4) What is their philosophy in agility
5). Ask if its ok to speak with other students and get their opinion of the instructor
6) what kind of flooring are they training on? If a cement base the matting should be at least 1/2 inch thick
7)Do they offer puppy classes
8) are there repeat students
REMEMBER AGILITY SHOULD BE FUN FOR YOU ANDYOUR PUP
Warning signs:
Allow prong or choke collars while training
Use equipment at full height for beginning students and dogs
Have more than 6-8 dogs in a class
Shout at or are harsh with handler or dog
Start dogs too young on equipment - puppies before the age of 10mos shouldnt be doing repetitive jumping and no weaving until the age of 1yr.

Trainingrixie I will do another search for you, did you get my pm about Leader of the Pack? As I said Tracy Sklnar is a very good instructor, lots of experience and very patient with new pups and students. Remind me of where you are. Unfortunately you are kind of in a limbo area for agility right between two very active areas, where I am swims in agility clubs and trials, north of you by about 2 hours is the same
