What goals did you set for your dogs this year?
I am a big goal setter. I set goals for myself and my dogs. If you have already set goals for your dogs for this year, or would like to, please share them with us here. That way we can all look back to see what we've accomplished and what we want to work on.
Topper (Age today: 2 years, 4 months):
Laney (Age today: 1 year 2 months):
Alley (Age today: 1 year 7 months):
Jazz (Age today: 10 weeks):
Spirit (Age today: 1 week):

Some of the training I am looking into involves running/agility, so the age part is a big deal for it. My Rotts need to develop a bit more before I add speed into anything (PJ is only 9 months), but I am signing up and getting the training part started soon. The speed I can add later. I've never done any of this before, and I'm learning as I go along...LOL. They both completed their novice obedience last year which I am proud of, but lots more to go!!

little goals
I have a few little goals for my dog. We are going to complete puppy graduate class and begin novice obedience. Another goal in the next year is to get her walking on a loose leash 100%. Also to be able to sleep in a doggy bed instead of her kennel. Nothing like what you've got going on Novel but it's something right! Good luck with all those goals Novel, how on earth do you have time for the internet?!?

LOL... time for the internet?? That's my off time and break time. That's when they are eating and sleeping. LOL. I can eat while I'm here, and thankfully, get to sleep at night. However, they are my alarm clock. They are up at 7am, and if I'm on here until 1am, because I was talking, it doesn't matter. We get up at 7am. Once everyone has been out and pottied, we eat. I make breakfast for myself and everyone else, including the dogs, we eat, and then they eat. Since we can't exercise until 45 minutes after we eat, that is break time for the dogs. I try and get a few morning things done, cleaning and what not, and the puppers usually take a nap. About 9am we go out for our first run of the day. This takes us about an hour. Since Jazz is too young to exercise that whole time, she gets carried by me when she's tired. The others literally run for about 45 minutes, and when we turn around to head home, they trot still, but not the reckless running we see before hand. LOL! Again, since we rest after our morning run, they are either crated or stay out in the big play yard as I take care of my other animals. The chickens and ducks need feeding and watering, the bunnies too. I usually have a bit of paperwork, to see which rabbit needs to be bred, weaned, box put in, etc. On field days I put the pigeons in the bird box, and then put their feed and water in their coop. I don't feed or water them before we go out, because I want them to have motivation to come home, and If I "sleep" them, it tends to make everything come back up. That usually takes me an hour, especially with the water this time of year. The dogs are ready for a nap, and so they come in and lay down, if they're not already crated and sleeping. I have some time for some other household stuff, and internet!! ![]() About 1 we do whatever training we are doing that day. That usually means working each dog individually, with the exception of field work which is some individual and some brace work. Since I only train each dog for about 15 minutes at a time, we make a rotation in less than an hour. I may do another rotation if I have time and there is more I can see we should work on. Field work is a little different though, and we do hour sessions. I need them to be able to work effectiviely for long periods of time. Also, with the tracking and field work, we may have to travel elsewhere. Thankfully I live in a very agricultural area and I am able to use many different fields during the winter months. In the summer we have to travel farther, since the farmers are using their fields for crops and we can't go tearing around through them. About 5 we need to go out for our evening run. We do this later and later as the days get longer, but I try and get it as close to dark as I can, so that they get the most from the day. I do most of our training outside, but do some obedience work at night, after dark. Also, each day is different grooming. Thursday is nails, Tuesday we clean ears, Wed. is teeth. Thursday is the only longer grooming session. Ears, Teeth, Coat days are usually just checking to make sure things are still good. I like to look over each dog every day to notice any changes in health, condition, feel for any lumps, bumps, parasites, etc. Since they are my little athletes, they also get massages. After a long day this helps to loosen up any muscles, prevent injury and keep them in tip top shape. We eat about 6:30 - 7pm. and then they usually sleep for a good portion of the evening. When my hubby gets up for work, they usually play with him, and that's when we spend our quiet time together. I read or do some writing while they all cuddle up with me. Ten is their bed time, and after a potty break they are crated. I get some free time then, and in the morning we start all over again. The hardest part for me is deciding where to go each week. Some weekends may offer a show in one area, a hunt test in another, and a tracking test in yet another. I have actually sat down and already figured out where I am going to be each weekend through August. I look at each weekend and see where I can accomplish the most. Of course, that has to be all slightly liquid, because one dog may or may not be ready for such and such event. The best thing about goals is that they are something to plan around. The worst that can happen is I don't achieve them, but at least I have something to shoot for. |

Ft. Mitchell, KY (right outside of Cincinnati so I'm told)
We were told by Phantom's breeder that WHEN he finishes, and WHEN he specials, we need to do this and that ,and WHEN he goes to Eukanuba and the Garden (Madison Square Garden aka Westminster). Talk about no pressure!!! LOL (She has only one goal left in her breeding/showing career, and that's a BIS dog. She thinks Phantom could be one) |

Since I'm not into showing, agility, flyball and all the other things, mine may seem to pale here, but I think it's fitting for my little blind girl just the same. She's going to be tested for Therapy work on the 8th and if she passes she will have a job.........finally. It's important to her and to me that she can get out and be with people and kids to make her and the others feel really happy.
As for Zada and Azrael I will continue their training in obedience myself. |
