What are Puppy Points and Rep Power

What is rep power and what are puppy points? Came in today and noticed I now have a rep power of "1" and was just curious. Tried to look in questions, and saw puppy points are one way of increasing rep power. But, what are they and what do they do? What are they for?

If you look in teh top right hand corner of each post, you will see something that says "puppy points".

These are generally used when you think someone has made a great post. Informative, helpful, whatever your reason. You click on the "puppy points" link and type in a reason as to why you think this person deserves them.

Although people do seem to forget about them a lot...LOL. I'm guilty myself, read a post I think is great, and totally forget to give puppy points. DOH! I'm pretty good though, I love to give points for good posts.

And the number of puppy points you're able to give someone is your rep power. (so you can give people 1 puppy point at the moment...and British Bandit can give 79)

Rep power increases the more points you're given by others and the more posts you make (ie: time you spend here).

I think the puppy points system is a great idea to encourage participation, and encourage quality over quantity of posts...

Rivsky - Yup, where it says 'Latest Puppy Points Received' at the bottom of your CP page, that is the list of puppy points other people have given you (and it lists what post/s of yours they were awarded for).

And I should point out that you don't actually have to add a comment in the box when you give someone puppy points, although it's nice to do because the person can see why you gave them points.

Hey Cass - I'm a bit confused by Radar_Love's rep power. There should be some rep power simply from having 120 posts shouldn't there?

misdemeanorsmom has a rep power 1 with only 33 posts, and they both have one "pip".

See why I'm confused? LOL

I'm assuming that one of them has had puppy points added to them and therefore has earned one rep point due to that.
If both have had puppy points added then the person who gave misdemeanorsmom points had more rep points to give than the person who gave radars_love points.

The points are a fun way to give kudos to some one and like others who have been around a while I too am guilty of not using them nearly enough.

This reminds me, I seriously need to give out some puppy points! I was stuck at one 'pip' for like a year, and all of a sudden I've gone up to 5! Time for some giving back!
