Reputation Box

What on earth is this reputation box all about that has started to appear on the top right hand side of some peoples posts, with points next to it?

Rep points can be taken away or given to someone. When you see a post that you feel it's author or someone else made an exceptionally good point, post or anything else that impressed you, you can click on "reputation" and give them a "good rep" for it.

The same works in reverse if you feel that someone has been offensive or something of that nature you can also give "bad rep" for their post or comments. This isn't something that should be used however if one simply doesn't agree with someone's thoughts on a particular issue.

You can check your own rep by clicking on "User CP" towards the top left side (and next to FAQ and Members List) of your screen to see what others have given to you. I call them Rep Tarts

You have a point crossfire, but I think people will use it if they simply don't agree with you. I have an intact, cropped and docked dog. I'm sure I've lost points for that.

I probably have lost a few as well, I tend to argue my pro crop/dock choice all the time...lol

See the thing is its not a new thing. Its been there since the new site was up. Just with the new format its a little more obvious.

But Crossfire explained its purpose very well.

Yeah, Crossfire did a good job of explaining it. You haven't lost any points from me... I love the look of a croped/docked dog :-D

Yes, I tend to give points to those who make good educational posts in the debate forum, mods who are extremely helpful and such. I also gave neg once or twice to those who are mean or trying to be offensive to someone.

Hmm, I've probably lost a ton then since out of the plus 10 I have here at home only 4 are spayed or neutered.

Seriously, rep tarts can be a lot of fun if their used for the positive. Using them in the negative for no other reason than to take a stab at someone because you don't agree with their training methods, the fact that they have an unaltered pet or things of that nature shouldn't be done.

if you do suspect someone of this let a mod know- we will investigate...and can reverse it if we strongly believe that was the case.

I've noticed, it's just changed since GP switched to the new layout. The reputation box is larger and the amount of points a member has is visible. Before it was just a little bit of text that said "reputation" and the green squares.
Crossfire I agree, people very often do use it incorrectly, and dock/add to your rep points only if they agree or disagree with you. So, like Gooch said, if people didn't agree with having a cropped/docked dog, they would give a negative rep. point to someone with a cropped or docked dog, who supports the right to crop/dock, etc. I think the rep system is great if it's used right, though.. People on this forum seem to use it well.

Someone has been giving me positive points since this post. Thanks! Even if I disagree with someone I try not to be nasty-we have enough of that in politics.

I've never given out negative reputation points. Of course, I didn't know about giving reputation points until about a month ago, but that's beside the point. The point is that I think you shouldn't give out negative reputation points unless somebody is being mean and nasty, especially if they have no justification for being mean and nasty.

In fact, I remember a poster on DF forums that was really, really mean. If people were chatting innocently about whether or not you should supplement with vitamin C, he would barge in, call the last poster a few inappropriate names, and tell all of the posters how stupid they were. Unfortunately, we had some horrible (nonexistent) administrators at the time, and they didn't ban him until he had made quite a few hurtful posts. Someone like him would deserve negative reputation points--and lots of them (and then they would deserve to be banned).

But I don't think someone should be given a bad reputation for ignorance. After all, we all start somewhere, and a lot of people come onto these boards to learn more and ask questions. And someone certainly shouldn't be given a bad reputation for holding different views than someone else.

I agree that someone shouldn't be given negative reputation points for ignorance.. However I have given negative reps (not on this forum) to ignorant people who happen to think that they know everything, and constantly and not-so-politely argue the knowledge of other people.

Well, thanks to everyone for answering my original question. After reading everyones comments I think it makes sense to have an "Unwritten rule" that no one awards or deducts points in the debate forum, where opinions differ and temper flies.

It would be far too easy for someone to loose their well deserved points due to a heated conversation, or be awarded more points than they deserve because other people are backing up their stance.
