Who's in the wrong?
Everyone. The school should have an adult supervising the children. The children should know better. The children's parents should have taught them better. The owner should not leave dogs unattended in a yard that is not escape-proof. It sounds like some puppies got aroused, hopped the fence, and the running, screaming children got them even more worked up. Scratches are from dogs jumping on you generally. I've yet to see a dog that deliberately uses it's paws to truly attack. They weren't acting aggressively, but dogs shouldn't be loose on a playground. Unfortunately, the puppies probably had a great time, so that behavior has been rewarded. That said, I can't imagine having three 5 month old puppies at one time. How do you remain sane?!

it is the school's and the childrens fault.
i know the woman was just letting her dogs out to go to the bathroom but the children should know not to bother dogs especially pitbulls since they are so "dangerous" (thanks to all the publicity) either way the school officials should have had that area where the woman lived marked off so the kids cant bother the yard or the woman either.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt that this whole situation was handled extremely poorly.
I never even thought about the school officials. Where were they?? If this has happened repeatedly... this woman has every right to be upset. And I feel like just screaming if these dogs are Am Staffs, Boxers, Bull Terriers or the like. Why is if it involves a Pit Bull, or what someone thinks is a APBT, it's news??? I mean, if a Collie had gotten onto the playground and scratched a kid would it have made the news??? |

And are the school going to get anyone to explain to the kids what appropriate behaviour is around dogs? If they are in fact sticking sticks and generally teasing them at the fence line is anything going to be done to stop this happening again? No - blame the dogs. It's all their fault of course
The owner I guess also has some responsibility to ensure that her fences are good enough to be able to contain 3 dogs as well.

I agree Julie, it's only news worthy because they're pitties, and I agree with ewarp too. Very nicely said. It's no one persons fault but it's certainly got very little to do with the dogs themselves. Thank goodness they realise that they aren't dangerous dogs though (even if they are being cautious).

If a child was running around all three of my dogs would chase them and jump just playing especially Lucy because she is a puppy. I can't believe this made the news...

Agreed that this is only news because they are pitties.
This is also why in the great state of Illinois if you torment a dog it gets a free pass if it bites you. There is only so much a dog should have to put up with and kids sticking sticks through the fence and hitting them is not in that realm. And to me the dogs only scratching the kids and not biting them are signs of puppies trying to play with the kids not attacking them. The owner should have done a better job containing th dogs, but nothing is 100% no matter how careful you are.

Ewarp said it very nicely.
And yes it hit the news because of the breed. Just another excuse to hype up the media and get people to agree to banning pitties

this is exactly the reason my dogs have never been outside without me being there as well. I think the woman should take that into account, but defineatly the bigger problem here is the kids and school supervisors that allowed the kids to wander over to her backyard and poke sticks through the fence and irritate the dogs. That fine she had to pay, should be given right back so she can put up a privacy fence, and the parents of those kids should be embarrassed and be brushing up on their parenting skills. Sadly I bet they try and sue and teach the kids a valuable lesson on becoming a "victim".

That is so rediculus!!!
I have to gripe about the kids, that is wrong, i was tought you don't mess with dogs! period! and if you do you get what you asked for! Any dog would get dangerous if they were treated like that... Of course the schools pushes all responsibility from themselves. Uahh, I better quit now, that just agrivates me!!! You allready made all the valid and good points... I am honestly thinking about sending the newsreporter an email! Here in Oklahoma you are not allowed to make faces at a dog(you can get fined bigtime), if something like that would be valid in her state I would try sueing! Edit: I wrote that news channel an email... about all the concerns from both sides....

I wonder if everyone would write their feelings on this and send a copy to both the newspaper who ran this story, and the school. This should never be let go like this, or they win another strike against Pitties.

If I had dogs being tormented through the fence, I would be happy if my dog did something about it. Is that wrong?? LOL I hope the kids got scared enough not to do it again. Whoever let them keep antagonizing the dogs are the ones that should be fined
