Ok, I have had ENOUGH with the low-carb craze...its probably the worst diet idea ever concieved...I am sitting here, watching a little TV before I go to bed...its been so long since I've watched prime time tv, that I was shocked when every other phrase in commercials was "Atkins friendly" or "low carb!"...
Now, let me explain why Atkins is the worst diet ever... 1) Atkins says carbs are bad... Carbs are good, they give energy...they are the fuel of the body. If you don't have carbs, you are tired in the day. The key is not to eat five loaves of bread per hour...that may constitute an overload of carbs 2) Atkins diets make you feel great Wrong, many people can get very ill on Atkins type diets. Lawsuits prove this. 3) Atkins says you need a meat rich diet... WRONG, WRONG, WRONG...oh wow...I have low carbs...yet I can't seem to get my clogged arteries clear....fancy that. What you need is a BALANCE... Now, let me toss out my idea for a good diet... 1) Eat less fast food/candy/ice cream/etc 2) Eat more carbs/meat/cheese/yogurt/milk, milk, milk/water!!!/etc 3) Run, then run more. Don't walk...walking does little...you get more bang for your minute if you run (or hike!) 4) Ignore diet crazes like Atkins... Now, I respect Atkins, the man...but I point out that he followed his diet, and died overweight. |

In the long term effect it can also give you a higher risk of stroke...
Ive always been against it....some carbs are good like you said.. my mothers fav quote from when I was a kid is all I ever think about when this topic comes up "all things in moderation" you can eat anything if you dont eat too much of it

1) Atkins says carbs are bad...
Atkins does not say crabs are bad, he says cut down to so many crabs pre day, to help burn fat that is stored in your body. 2)Atkins diets make you feel great Wrong, many people can get very ill on Atkins type diets. Lawsuits prove this. My Dad does Atkins he doesn’t feel good or bad on it; his friend does it, same thing. 3)Atkins says you need a meat rich diet... WRONG, WRONG, WRONG...oh wow...I have low crabs...yet I can't seem to get my clogged arteries clear....fancy that. What you need is a BALANCE... Yes; Atkins helps you balance crabs with fat and calories and everything else you need. Now, I respect Atkins, the man...but I point out that he followed his diet, and died overweight. Yes he died over weight why? He was in a comma for three months and had been really sick (I think he had a heart attack or something like that.) 1) Eat less fast food/candy/ice cream/etc Good Idea; 2) Eat more carbs/meat/cheese/yogurt/milk, milk, milk/water!!!/etc when you eat crabs your not burning as much fat as when you were cutting back for the crabs 4) Run, then run more. Don't walk...walking does little...you get more bang for your minute if you run (or hike!) Yep; that we agree on 4) Ignore diet crazes like Atkins... Some “diet crazes” really do work. Atkins is fine; I wound never be able to do it, but I would also never be able to be a vegetarian. |

I did Atkins for a about a week, ended up quitting because I was literally disgusted with all the fat. Don't get me wrong I love a good Breakfast occasionally, but Bacon and eggs every day, yuck.

2- Im a vegitarian, I eat carbs, and im no where near over weight. I havent eaten meat in over 9 years. I dont only eat carbs, though, I have a ballanced diet that just happens to exclude meat, I eat tons of soy, and veggies, fruits I couldnt live with out. And I eat a huge bowl of pasta at least once a week...but I dont sit on my ***. The only time carbs are really going to bother you is when you sit around and dont burn off the energy that the carbs give you. If you dont excercise then yes carbs are bad for you cuz they just sit there and turn to fat...but if you get up off your *** and excercise or walk your dog, or whatever, then carbs are good....

I worked in a gym for a few years, and learned a lot about nutrition while I was there. Yes a agree that Atkins is bad. I'm not a big fan of Weight Watchers points either.
Like QW said, carbs are converted to energy. You need energy to get through the day. With Weight Watchers points, if you eat something like a meal from McDonald's (we all do it once in a while ), that uses up all your points for the day, and you can't eat for the rest of the day. That’s not healthy. It's best to get an even balance of carbs, proten, veggies, and some "good" fat. And stay active If you’re a person who works out every day, than you need to eat 4-5 small meals a day. Another good idea is to have one day a week as a cheat day, where you can eat what ever you want (well, with in reason).A program that I really like is "Body for Life". I did it, and lost 70lbs

You father and his friend does not constitute a literal portion of Atkins dieters. Many people find that the food Atkins calls for leads to extreme obesity, and can even lead to heart conditions due to chemical imbalences...again, lawsuits prove this. Balance? Atkins does not help you balance everything you need...I'm not sure where you got that. The best way to burn fat and calories is to quicken your motabolism...by running...hiking, biking...etc. I would like to know a diet craze that has helped people loose weight....and keep it off. Atkins does not qualify because many, many people develop serious medical problems from the imbalance... You need carbs....periodl |

Okay, guys, here's my two-cents worth, gleaned from many years learning about nutrition, both for my own health and as a necessity during several years of natural bodybuilding.
Different eating styles work for different metabolisms. My sister is a vegetarian and it seems to agree with her, I became severely run down and felt terrible after a month of vegetarian eating. I used the Atkins diet years ago to see if it worked to help me cut up. Yep, it worked like a charm for me, but on the original, much more strictured program I really missed salads during the first two weeks. I don't know that I'll ever be motivated enough to do it again, but I felt great. Walking, in the long run, is a far better choice than running, unless you're lucky enough to be able to run on a specialized track surface that minimizes the damage to your joints. Knee replacements aren't particularly enjoyable. I know too many runners who can attest to that. Using a heavy bag is also a great aerobic exercise unless you've got shoulder problems. If you've got good balance, skating burns more calories that just about anything, and cycling really gives you more bang for your buck as far as boosting your metabolic rate without undue wear and tear on those joints. If you really want to boost your metabolic rate, add weight exercises to your repertoire, three times a week if possible. Muscle uses calories at a significantly higher rate than any other body tissue, and toning those muscles will improve your shape significantly. No, ladies, you won't get big, bulging muscles. Trust me. You can't work hard enough to accomplish muscular hypertrophy without meaning to. It's hard, long, involved and takes a horrific amount of effort. I typically spent 4 - 6 hours a day, 6 days a week in the gym using extremely heavy weights. So the answer is . . . there is no one answer. Listen to your body. By the way, Jim Whatshisname, (I can't remember right now) the guy who started the whole jogging movement, died in his 50s of a heart attack. So, there are no guarantees. |

I have a simple carb philosophy. All carbs are not created equal - some "high carb" foods are also high in protien or fiber (or both) i.e. beans, whole grains. I think these are essential foods and should be eaten on a regular basis. The "high carb" foods that don't have protien or fiber (i.e. sweets, white flour products) are empty calories and should be eaten in limited quantities, or infrequently.
As in most things, I think balance and moderation is the key, and finding what works for each individual. I don't think there is a "silver bullet" diet that will work for everyone - except perhaps to eat less, and move more. |

I agree with you 100%. And as of yet, no one's ever convinced me that white sandwich bread is anything more than a semi-edible napkin.

I'm not even willing to say it looks or tastes good. And iceberg lettuce is another one of those non-foods. It's actually worse than a non-food, as there is a chemical component that causes a mild, temporary semi-paralysis in the colon. I won't buy it, and I try to patronize restaurants that don't serve it in their salads.
