Unhappy would you leave your dog for a job?

Hi

I am devastated by the news that my 11-year-old staffi, Piglet, has a huge, tumour on her spleen. Because of her age operating is not really an option.
She is happy and healthy at the moment, other than having a very round tummy.
I have been offered a job in another city (a 2 hour flight away) and was planning to take her with me. That is no longer an option.
I have been looking for work for nearly a year and makes it very hard to turn down the job.
My mom would look after Piglet if I left, but Piglet sleeps in my bed and is really attached to me. I feel terrible about leaving her when she needs me most.
Just wondering what other dog lovers think?

As much as it might hurt, I honestly think it would be a wiser decision to take the job and leave Piglet with your mom.

If you have been looking for work for a year and have finally been offered a job, take it, espeically since you have someone who can care for your pup that isn't a stranger and is part of the family.

Why can't you take her with you if you were planning on doing so beforehand? I can understand if you wouldn't want to ship her via plane, but you could always plan a roadtrip once you are settled to get her home with you.

I have a 13 year old Labrador who has numerous tumuors (one on his liver, or maybe it was his spleen...?, that may be cancerous) and he's treked on for about a year after we thought he wouldn't make it. We contemplated having him put down a few months ago, but we decided against it. He's doing okay, and a roadtrip wouldn't be hard on him. A flight would be, but not a car ride.

That sounds like a tough call, but one only you could answer. You know her better than anyone else. Good luck in your decision and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks so much for your responses; it really does help me. The vet advised against moving her at this stage - partly because I would be alone with a strange vet in an emergency. Also, at home with my mom, she always has somebody with 24/7. Whereas, I would have to leave her alone during the day.
Sorry to hear about your labrador being sick too, but glad he is ok. Piglet is also still very well and loving all the extra special pampering. I have postponed leaving for a month and will see how it goes. My heart is broken at the thought of leaving her, but I can take comfort in knowing I could fly back often.

Good luck with this Sam, I agree with what CalGal said, it is hard for others to comment, because everyone has different circumstances.
Speaking from my own experience, there was a month that I was away from Sarah due to a family health emergency in another state. She was with my husband at our house, so it was not uprooting to her, per se, but she was evidently very depressed - - it was a difficult time for all of us. A year later, when she became sick, it made me sad that I lost that time with her when she was in great health.
Make the best decision that you can - -for all of you. And HUGS to Piglet

This is a tough call. It's up to you, as others have said. Deep down, you know what's best for you and your life.

If this were me, and there was no way at ALL that I could take her, I would probably take the job and leave the dog with my mother (assuming my mother was willing). Although it would break my heart. Only because, jobs are so difficult to find now days and in some countries it's even tougher. So often you just can't pass it up.
However, I would explore all options before I settled. I mean I would be absolutely positive I couldn't take her. A strange vet isn't a big deal. Just contact the vet in the new area and let them know her situation. Ask her previous vet to send over her files to the new one. As long as the new vet is informed, he/she will be fine to treat your dog.

Cass.

If there's someone you can really trust that will look after her, then that's fine. However if you feel her health will be jeopardized because of missing you then maybe you should take her with you. But then I just thought, how who will be tending to her while you work?.. considering that she has health problems

I know this is an old thread but just reading the topic upset me. I know people who have left their dogs or gotten rid of their dogs like they were towels to be tossed around. I hope you kept Piglet with you. Think how that precious baby would feel -- abandoned. I hope you didn't do that. I hope you treated that life like you would a child. Would you leave your child to die without you there to comfort them?

Update and reply to Doggie Joy
I was really upset to read your comments, but realize you can't know how much I loved Piglet. I would never have "tossed her away". Poor Piglet got suddenly worse and her tumour was massive. One night she tried to hide under my bedside table and I knew she was suffering. She could no longer control her bladder and was wet and shivering. So I had to have her put down - it still makes me cry. I sleep with her collar in my hand.
Thanks to those who tried to help, it did help.
