Angry In-laws (Venting)

**Even though they are are not officially my in-laws yet, they will be soon enough.**

So Jill and I were heading home for break, and she calls her mom and finds out they are adopting a dog. Good and bad... Good to see a dog getting a home, bad because it was not thought out. Also bad because they are not good dog owners. They are people with unreal expectations for their dog, and expect her to understand every word that comes out of their mouth. I know the dog is going to end up back in the shelter unless we take it in when the time comes, but I will not be able to take another dog in for about 6 months. Jill's father has already threatened to take the dog back because it got hair on their couch. This was when I walked away because they would not of liked to hear what I was going to tell them.

It is such a shame too, because this has to be the best behaved (still needs to learn some commands, but that is not biggy) shelter dogs I have ever met. Not to put shelter dogs down, but this one is just so polite.

Between this and having to deal with my brother, his GF, and my other borther's GF, my week sucked.

That's too bad Any possible way of convincing them that they just might now be the right people for a shelter dog's forever home?

Mad because he got hair on the couch? I guess I would probably not get along with those people.

Poor doggie.

lots of sympathy here
My inlaws are morons about pets too (amongst other things), yet think they know everything. My father in law is one of those guys who thinks dog training consists of speaking in a loud low voice and telling the dog No! a lot. They don't say too much to me because Sammy is better behaved and trained than any dog they have ever owned or seen (not bragging here- they don't do anything with their animals).
Good luck, maybe your good example will help.

Boy oh boy, do I ever know a few people like that. It is soooo irritating and frustrating. I'm sorry Mulroony. You are in a really difficult place right now. I do hope they'll decide to forget it and take the dog back. Maybe it will find a better home. I'm so sorry.

Join the club of "Idiot In-Laws" I have them myself. And the sucky thing is, you'll never get them to understand. They think dogs are dirty, mismannered, and will always become vicious with age. And a dog inside??? NEVER!! How dare I even have dogs in my house, not to mention they sleep in the bedroom, or even on the bed!! Trust me, I know exactly how you feel, and sometimes, walking away is the best thing you can do. Been there, done that.(more than once)

I'm afraid I would be the kind of person who would make a point of never visiting them, regardless of what my 'significant other' wanted. I just couldn't hold my tongue in that situation.

Cass.

Mine (inlaws) live close too. This summer we spent quite a bit of time with them at the lake. My mother in law always wanted to hold the leash when we took Jamsmine on a walk, but as soon as Jasmine pulled hard to go after a squirrel she would let go of the leash. I got sooooo mad at her and told my husband that she clearly was not able to walk our dog nor ever dogsit for our dog as she can not handle her in the case of an emergency. What the heck, what if she ran in the busy road or soemthing? OHHHH don't even get me started on my Mother in law.

"dirty, mismannered, and will always become vicious with age."

Hmmm! sounds like some people I know! Just goes to show this doesn't always apply to dogs.... if dogs become that way it's usually because humans were involved. I sure hope the pup doesn't get turfed.

good one buddy, thats great!!!!

my brother in law is a moron , too. they have a dog a white GSD, nice calm and well fat. It is just a yard dog gets thrown a dogfood bag, uncontrolled eatin and the kid beats her eventhough he was just two 1/2 but someday that dog wount submit anymore and lets the boy fall on her. i even told that boy once not to beat that dog oh boy, was his dad mad. I felt so sorry and even my husband said ok let's try how the two girls get along, because Kessy is a real female, she doesn't like competition, so we took them both away from their saveplace and let them run, Kessy accepted the older female and even wanted to play, so we said, great that's a chnce there, we have room and that might work out, then that moron came and told his dog 'for fun' " go get her" and the nicest fight was on, he even wanted to get rid of her.....
how stupid can u be.....

i feel with you, hope it turns out good for that dog

I can feel for you. My ex husband his family drove me crazy they hated animals they said they all smell. Sheezz- you should have smelled these people sometimes. My ex was a real winner too. I used to drink when I married him literally. Once I sobered up, I couldn't believe how these people were. Anyway happily married now. Have great inlaws- Might be because they are In FL and Im in NY. Actaully I think if you talk to most couples most fights are about inlaws and family. Just always realize its not the one you love its them. Getting mad cause of hair on the couch. Why did they get a dog then? Anyway in my house you dont like to get hair on you then don't come in cause we got lots of it. I wonder have these people had dogs before. I would let your partner talk about it with her parents. Parents forgive what their kids say but never forget what their partners say. Good luck. I hope your week gets better.
