There is no such thing as too cold for Dakota, I think he's just a snow dog at heart. Can't wait for there to be some snow here within 75 miles of us, so I can take him to the mountains to roll around in it.
Ripley bitches about 50 degree weather, so when I go for walks with both boys in the morning I just pick him up and stuff him in my sweater after he's done his thing. Shiner had that really tight double coat, she -lived- in the snow. I remember one year we got 4-5 feet of it, she dug herself a snow tunnel and slept in it. |

Shadowkins - no kidding. It's been fun to read the responses. I'm still chuckling over the vision in my head of walking the dog on the treadmill.
I'm picturing a real 80s thing, headband and all! Just my warped mind. |

Well..how cold is too cold? Anything below 50 degrees F
I'm a person that HATES the cold. My dogs don't really enjoy snow...its more of a pain to them(they have a hard time getting through it when it is high). |

I am so NOT a cold weather person. And the wind??? Jeez..I hate it. But my GS love playing in the snow, but the cold...teens and twenties...is too much. My JRT hates it. This morning we got our first snow of the season, and he refused to go out in it! (little snot!!) But, that's the way it goes, I live out in the country, so my dogs get to run in the open....I just stand and watch!! LOL

Its unacceptable to not walk your dog just because its cold - a freak blizzard or monsoon fine, but if its going to be on a regular basis (ie more than a few days a year) you just gotta deal with it. Either that or dont get a dog.

BellFounder, I don't know where you live but here it can get to -30 C (-22F) and stay there for a week or two. At that temp it's actually dangerous to be out for more than a few minutes (especially if there's a wind to go with it). I'm not going to put myself or my dogs in danger just to be outside. We can run and play in the house - chase and fetch happen often in my house even when it's warm out. Just one of the adjustments you have to make when you live in the frozen north.

I agree with Zookeeper and Shalva, your post is a bit harsh.
Where I live in Saskatchewan ( like Zookeeper in Alberta ) you don't mess around walking a dog in -20 to -30 weather, especially if there is a wind chill. Some times with the wind it can feel like -48 C, that is very dangerous for man and beast. There are other ways to exercise a dog without necessarily going for a walk! |

sorry maybe i should have put exercise rather than actually walk. Fact is though that the majority of people DONT have several fenced acres. I actually find it quite horrifying that people dont consider facilities for proper exercise all year round as one of the fundamental considerations for dog ownership.

let's work

Well we have no choice , we have chores to do outside.... so we always have to go....
Well of course sometimes i hurry, when it is wet and cold or very icy windy. But it can be fairly cold like -25 and the sun is shining and then it it awsome to be outside, it almost feels warm.... Hm and sometimes it is "dogweather" meaning a weather you would't even send a dog outside, so I don't and stay home with my dog, and yeah it is enjoed, there are things to do inside, too. |

Abbie loves the cold too much. We have a porch off of our kitchen that leads to her enclosure, so after a long time of spending hours pleading with her to come inside, we insulated the porch, put a doggie door on that door and our kitchen door, put a loveseat covered in blankets in front of the window and we let her sit out there now. She spends so much time out there in the winter. Its still freezing, but it makes me feel better that she at least has wind protection and the option to come in. I get she's probably hot in the house with her double coat and the heat at 70, but it gets lonely in the winter she refuses to come inside.
She's a bit more active in the winter though. She'll frolick in the snow and try to catch it as it falls. She was ok about walking in it the previous years, she got a little scared in the icy spots, because NO ONE around here believes in rock salt of any kind, so we were trucking through several feet of snow at times to avoid them. Who knows this year, since she's being stubborn, we might just be confined to the yard/block for most of the winter. Our winters are fairly mild compared to those extremes, If it ever hit any negatives like that here though, she'd be inside whether she liked it or not. That'd be the time I lock the doggie door and only let her out leashed in the yard, so i'm certain she's back in. |
