Join me in protesting the American Cancer Societies latest fundraiser!
http://www.maurices.com/lucky.cfm
Not sure if anyone noticed this, but Maurice's, a clothing store chain, in cooperation with the American Cancer Society, is selling little stuffed dogs for $5 to raise funds. Unfortunately, what is the puppy??? Lucky, the LABRADOODLE!! Does anyone else find this incredibly shortsighted of the ACS? Did they not do their homework, or are they trying to reach a yuppy crowd. I would love to hear everyone's opinions on this. Am I going off the deep end on this one or am I legitimately upset with their newest campaign?! P.S. You can contact the American Cancer Society through this page: http://www.cancer.org/asp/contactUs/cus_global.asp |

I guess I'm so upset I can't even collect my thoughts. My biggest gripe is that Labradoodles, IMO, at this time, represent the greatest lack of unethical breeding and lack of health testing, and they're using them to represent a foundation that is supposed to be researching and curing disease!

Well, I don't really see anything wrong with it. Its just a stuffed dog. They aren't really advocating or saying it is a purebred or anything.
Honestly I think the average person is just gonna look at it and think "Cute toy, and I'm helping an important cause". I don't think it will in anyway encourage people to breed Labradoodles if they hadn't already planned on it. A good amount of people don't even know what a Labradoodle is. They just picked a "hot topic" to make the toy on this year. No different than if they had made Furby's or talking Paris Hilton dolls. It wasn't the best choice they could have made, but I don't feel as if its doing to do any great damage or anything. |

Well I agree that is horribly irresponsable to promote the "doodles". Unfortunatley society tends to dictate thinkgs like this, and there really isn't a lot that can be done. To the average person the "doodles" are just a bunch of cool dog breeds. The way I see it is if it raises tons of money for cancer research I'm fine with it. I have tons of respect for responsible REAL dog breeders such as yourself Novel, but when it comes down to it, a cure for cancer is just more important to me.

I completely understand the need for cancer research, yet don't condone rainsing money in any way possible. To me it would be like using a tobacco leaf toy to sell for lung cancer research, although I admit, thats overdramatizing it a bit!
To me, doodles represent lack of health testing, greediness and unethical practices. I highly doubt that this is what the ACS was trying to portray when they started their campaign, but is the general public really so uneducated that the "cuteness" factor outweighs logical thought?! |

When I first read this, I thought it was just a stuffed dog that happens to look like a labradoodle. So I was thinking "sooo, maybe it's not a labradoodle, maybe it's just a scruffy dog, but clicking on the link shows "Lucky the Labradoodle".
I'm gonna have to agree with you Novel, that's not right. I'll send a letter to them as well. They could have always gone with "Maurice the Mutt" or "Lucky the Labrador" etc... lol!edit: Whoops, forgot to say my other piece. I don't think people will see it and start breeding Labradoodles, I'm sure Novel didn't think that either. But it'll increase their populairty which will increase the demand for Labradoodles, which will keep the existing doodle breeders in the moolah. |

I also don't think that she's trying to get people to stop donating, but there's got to be a better way. Two wrongs don't make a right, I'm sure you can agree with that. Any resposible dog owner won't buy one of those "doodles" even if they are a stuffed toy. That's money that the ACS is losing out on! They could always do other types of dogs, cats or even stuffed bears you know?
I am so sorry about your mother! I wish cancer was a thing of the past. My grandfather has prostate cancer as well, but so far he's fighting it. I'll keep your mom in my prayers tonight. |

CTDog, I am so sorry for what your family is going through. In our family cancer is what gets us in the end, either cancer or old age. We have had way too much of it for one family. Well, one case is way too much for any family.......Again, I am so sorry. |

I think that it was a foolish poor choice for whoever chose it. and they should be inundated with letters and such.... BUT cancer research should not suffer because of an ignorant marketing person who is probably watching all the hype about doodles all over the news lately.... tyra banks show... good morning america.... etc.... the fact is that my Aunt who was like a mother to me when my mother wasn't available died at 38 of breast cancer.... my sister in law is going to die of colon cancer.... my father in law has prostate cancer..... and I am not going to boycott the American CAncer society because of one idiot marketing person.... write a letter and complain about the choice of puppy sure.... but if you want me to boycott.... forget it....

It's just like any other advertisement. For example sex sells. I'm so sick of seeing tiny blondes (no offense blondes just an example!) in super small clothes parading their half naked bodies around on T.V ads. I don't agree with it, and think it sends a very wrong message to the young girls watching it. As long as it makes money those compainies will continue to use it. I lost 2 people who i was very close to from cancer. If you've never seen what brain cancer does to the human body, I invite you to do some research.I have a small army of the goofy looking cancer teddy bears that they have used in the past. I have done many other things with the ACS including a generouse donation each year. It is extremely hard to get people to donate their time and money for a cause. If by selling this cute puppy, they raise money for children that are suffering and families like mine who have gone through so much pain I'm all for it. I really don't think that it's going to cause people to breed or run out and purchase these dogs. |

I really think Novel ment to not buy the "Labradoodle" not stop donating to the Cancer Society altogeather. Still donate, but don't "donate" by buying one of the doodles.
Novel, I'm so sorry for speaking for you! If I'm wrong feel free to correct me! ![]() |

I don't really have a problem with this. I don't think it will increase or lend credibility to irresposible breeders and if it gains the cancer society much needed funds ... Honestly, I believe that people who want a dog will buy a dog. People who want a stuffed animal will buy a stuffed animal. Just because I get my kids a stuffed boa constricter for Christmas doesn't mean I'm ready to go out and buy them the real thing.

I have a problem with it. It does make people think it's a breed and people are ignorant about dogs enough as it is.
I would NEVER buy that toy dog...not for any charity. However, I will continue to donate to cancer funds. Cass. |
