A chained up dog...
On our way to school (only about three minutes from our house if that...probably about a mile maybe?) there is a house that has a gorgous brindle Mastiff pup who is HUGE. But the poor pup is chained up outside the front door!
He has probably a ten foot chain that is litterally a chain, not one of those plastic covered wire ones. Some of the chain is wraped around the base of a huge tree, and the other end is wrapped around the dogs neck as a collar. ![]() He has a pile of dirty blue rags that he has shredded at the base of the tree, and a chickencoop looking thing for a dog house that I'm not even sure he can fit into. And it has nothing in the coop for it other than the bare wood of the floor. I have yet to see a water or food dish (they may be out of my sight), but it is getting fed because it isn't skinny. It isn't fat either, though. I don't know these people's names, nor their address. And no offense to anybody, but they live in a kinda crappy house right by some trailers and seeing as how they probably got this dog because it looks mean (I think it looks like a big baby ) doesn't inspire much confidence. So any ideas on what I can do to help the poor puppy? And are they doing something wrong that I'd have the grounds to call animal control on them? Edited to add: And then seeing as how it is really cold here (wind chill might get down to the low teens or below at night), I'm concerned that it will freeze because it has no source of warmth and it has really short hair. |

Could you call your local SPCA to take a drive by the house? I know that my neighbours called the humane society awhile ago because they didn't feel a dog was being taken care of. If it's not being taken care of properly, they'll remove it... although not sure if that's a good thing or an "out of the pan, into the fire" deal.
Maybe leave them some pamphlets about proper dog houses and what dogs need? (as in, food and water, warm place to sleep.. etc etc) |

*unrelated side note* Tiffany I LOVE your new avatar....TOO DANG CUTE!
As for that poor pup, a well placed call to your local ASPCA sounds like a good move. |

Here SPCA will come out within 2 days. They start by giving tickets and only take the dog if it is in mortal danger. The dog has to have shelter in winter / shade in summer and access to water. They would probably also have something to say about the chain. I wouldn't hesistate to call.
I sympathise with your situation. My sister just went through this with her next door neighbor- she actually cleaned the yard when the people weren't home so the dog didn't have to be chained in his own poo! She also fed him, refilled his water and went to their house and knocked on the door when he was sitting out in the rain shivering with no shelter. Many people called the SPCA on them. The SPCA came but it wasn't bad enough to take the dog- they just got warnings. In the end my sister convinced them to give us the dog and I ended up with him. I put a ton of work and money into him (shots, neuter, training) and he now lives on an acreage with a lovely family who adore him. I'm not taking on another project like that any time soon but it was very rewarding. I didn't mean to write a novel here- sorry. ![]() |

Please call animal patrol or the spca and let us know how the dog is looking.
I have a friend that has a bullmastiff and I wish he didnt have it. He takes well enough care of it. But it gets cheap food and I mean bottom line food. Not only that but he just doesnt have the room for it. It never gets walked or gets to run. I feel sorry for this dog, and Ive talked to my friend but I know he wont do anything to change, and that SUX!!! |

I agree with the others. Find out their address and file a complaint.

All right, I'll try to find out their address and I'll also try to call animal control. Not sure how yet, but I'll try. Maybe that is what I'll ask for my birthday...to have my mom call animal control on them. lol

Could your mom maybe go ask the people if she could have him since he isn't getting proper treatment. Doesn't it snow there? Can't imagine the poor thing out in the snow with no place to get into except a small dog house with nothing but a wood floor & no blankets. If she get him she could call the rescue who would come get him, pay for all his Vet. needs and find him the perfect home.
