So Mad!

About 4 months ago a woman posted in the Modesto freecycle that she had a 9 week old blind puppy. She had gotten the puppy 2 days earlier and had no idea it was blind as the "breeder" did not tell her he was. Though looking back she said every attempt she made to single out that pup was thwarted by the "breeder" in an attempt to keep all of the pups together, the "breeders" reasoning was that he would show more of his true self amongst his siblings. :Oh No: When in reality it sounds like she just did not want the perspective $ realizing there was something wrong with this pup. Anyhow, she (the new owner) posted on freecycle that she had a blind pup...which happened to be a Rat Terrier....and wanted any info she could on raising a blind dog.
I emailed her, while I did not and do not know anything about raising a blind dog I did have a few questions for her (about where the dog came from) and wanted to get her in touch with our breed rescue as they might be able to assist.
I tell her that she really should inform the "breeder" of this dog because she would need to know that she is throwing defective dogs...I asked if there "was a health guarantee":she said no, "Was there a contract": no, "was he given any shots or vet care of ANY kind before she paid for him?":no he had never seen a vet or a vaccination. She had discovered he was blind upon taking him int the vet for his exam and first round of vaccinations. She told the vet he had been behaving oddly and the vet checked him out...told her he was blind, completely blind. There were no signs of any trauma that caused it. the vet also stated the dog was in poor health and he would venture to say he was not poor breeding...DUH!
OK so she decides that she and her SEVEN children are going to raise this dog...I was hoping she would turn him over to Rat Bones who has placed blind pups before...any how, she is going to raise him. OK not much I can do. She does email me and let me know she told the "breeder" that the pup was blind (on the third day she had him she made the call) the "breeder began yelling at her, told her never to call there again, accused the lady of injuring the dog and hung up. Nice, very responsible.
So a few months goes by and I notice there is a Rat Terrier for sale on a Garage Sale site I created...umm WHAT? OK so I read it, there is indeed a Rat Terrier pup for sale...5 months old and BLIND for $150. Good grief. So I email her again, I tell her I do not have $150 to buy her pup however when she finds it impossible to place this poor guy I would be willing to take him in and find him the RIGHT home via Rat Bones rescues.
I contacted my friends at Rat Bones and things are now in motion.....slow motion but motion non the less.
Whew, I feel better now having gotten that off my chest. Thanks for listening...uh reading....

How awful! That breeder needs to be exposed. It's good that this person realizes her shortcomings and wants to re-home him. But what a shame she would advertise that way. Money for a blind dog? In an advertisement? Good heavens. You did a good thing to get her going in the right direction. I hope everything turns out well for this puppy, that he gets a forever home where he can be nurtured, helped along and loved. I'll be eager to hear what becomes of him.

Good for you Tribal! How awesome of you to get involved and not let it go. I can't believe she's selling the poor thing for $150. Trying to get her money back perhaps?

Poor little pup, it's always them who suffer.

Yes, trying to get her money back...she paid $200 for the pup who's name is Jasper so she was trying to recoup some of her cost to attempt to buy another dog.
I gave her a crash course on buy a good dog, she said she didn't want one for showing just as a pet. I told her that was wonderful....told her that the local shelter had MANY nice pets, as does Rat Bones rescues and many breeders. However if she chooses to go through any of these more reputable options that she needs to be prepared to answer MANY question, sign a contract and pay more, well maybe not at the local shelter but you know what I mean.
I explained the difference between a BYB, a puppy mill and an actual breeder. She began to cry and said she wished she had met me before buying Jasper, live and learn I guess.

Bless you for stepping up to the plate and latching on. The poor little thing needs a stable life and I'm sure some angel will come to his rescue. Is it possible you could keep us up on how this ends?

You bet I will.
I just heard back from Rat Bones this morning so hopefully we will get some progress soon.
I wish I had the experience and was set up to help this poor guy myself so there was not all of this waiting but at least the wheels are in motion now.
Thanks for your interest and concerns ladies...

Hopefully rescue can talk this woman out of trying to recover some of her money and do what is in the best interest of the dog! I know our rescue has at times paid for a dog just to get it into the right hands rather than allow it to suffer.

Poor puppy. Good for you for helping this pup out (and the owner too of course...even though she may not take your advice).

I think we need to educate people about reputable breeders and about how just because the breeder shows their dogs doesn't mean that's the only thing the puppies are produced for. This seems to be the most common reason why people won't go to a reputable breeder....because the think the puppies are only for showing. They need to know that they're all pets first, after all.

I could not agree more Cass. In fact thats basically what I told her.
She said that she thought as you figured, she thought why pay more for a dog because it is show quality? Why not just pay $200 for a dog when all she wants is a pet. I told her that is all I have, pets. Pets that I show and, pets with great conformation, temperament and health...still just pets. Pets that sleep on our beds (most nights), pets who go with me to poick my daughter up from school, play tug o war with, bath, feed and play with...pets who are part of our family.

What a wierd story. First a horrible breeder, and ignorant buyer, and now the pup needs rescuing. (we couldn't make this stuff up if we tried.)

I think she needs to sue the breeder, why did she back down after he yelled at her? She needs to stand up for herself and dogs everywhere by doing something.

I'm so glad you got involved. I don't really understand the Garage Sale thing. I've never seen a dog for sale in the garage sale area. do you think she was trying to find you since you were the one who set it up?
