A horrible end to a horrible day.
Tonight something really horrible happened to me... I never knew what real fear was until then... I have realised that the worst fear you can feel is for someone else.
I was already feeling horrible when I went to get Finn. I had to go to my English class with a friend to finish a magazine that we're writing and it was essential that we both be there. But Finn started crying from downstairs and I couldn't bring myself to leave him, nor to let down my friend. In the end I was forced to choose, and I went to fetch Finn. He did his needs in the street and I came in and played with him a bit, and then, as I hadn't done it earlier, I decide to take him for a walk. I put his lead on and my keys in my pocket, and closed the door behind me. He was very happy. We walked to the outside of the walls and he was running about on the grass having a whale of a time. A black spaniel came up to us, off-leash. I was a little worried at first, wondering where its owner was, but I saw it had a collar, and sure enough, I saw a woman with the leash in her hand. She ran up and sniffed Finn, and I thought, oh good, Finn's going to make another friend. They were sniffing each other, and then for no apparent reason the spaniel gave a loud growl and rushed at him. I pulled Finn away and the spaniel ran off. I was turning to go home, thinking this was a bad place to be now, when the spaniel ran back. It was growling the whole time. Finn tried to run away, and his collar came off. Then he was running flat out, with the spaniel behind him. I ran after him, and I heard a clink as my keys dropped out of my pocket. I didn't stop. The spaniel had dropped out of the chase, but Finn was still running. He crossed the road and was nearly run over by two cars. I was behind him calling him, but he was terrified and he didn't stop. He ran into a cul-de-sac in the end and I ran to him and put his collar on. He was crying and I was crying and I didn’t know what to do, and I picked him up and carried him home, but when I got there I remembered I didn’t have a key. So I carried him back. He already weighs eleven kilos and I was really tired, so I put him down, but he wanted to go home. So I carried him the rest of the way. Then I looked for the key. I only found a chocolate biscuit and the mandarin that I was going to eat. It was too dark to see properly. I went to the hotel that’s inside the walls, explained my situation and asked if I could borrow a torch. After a good deal of suspicious looks, they asked me for my name and telephone number, obviously thinking I was going to steal it, and gave me one. I carried Finn back to the slope where I had lost the keys and resumed my search. The torch’s battery was very low and it threw hardly any light. After a while of fruitless searching a couple of girls came up to me and asked me what I was looking for. I told them, and they called some friends to help me. One of them found the keys. I went to give the torch back while they held Finn. Afterwards we played the “chase-the-annoying-name-calling-boy-and-hit-him-on-the-head” game. Then I went home. I was glad then I had been with my newfound friends. All I got when I got home was an accusation that I had stayed home because the computer was on. Thank you for reading this. |

Oh gods, what a horrible time. I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. It was great that those people helped you out though, and lucky your keys were still there.
I'm surprised that woman didn't put her dog back on it's leash...that's shocking. Some people have no respect. I hope your friend will forgive you for not turning up to work on the magazine. Cass. |

I know exactly how you feel and I'm sorry you had to go through that. Thank goodness he didn't get bit. That woman needs a good talking to about having her dog off leash!
