Always room for one more

Most people hate their neighbor's dogs...
I hate the way my neighbors treat their dogs! You've all heard how my neighbor's dogs stay outside 24/7 bored to death (I'm still working on the letter to him, about walking them). I may have mentioned that I know of at least 4 people on ONE street that breed their dogs (one house I passed last night had about 10 Spaniel puppies romping in the grass. Very healthy pups, I think. I get the impression it's one of those [people] that just really likes having puppies around. Dog toys all over the yard, and a guy out watering keeping an eye on the pups. Not the first litter I've seen there either). Another house has their 2 German Shepherds tied outside all the time- they bark at us every time we pass by. Just all around depressing...
So tonight, my sis and I are out walking Missie... This one house (that has new dogs about every month, and occasionally puppies. I can't figure out what's going on...) we pass by, someone opens the front door, and a kid or two and 2 dogs come racing out. The dogs, a Pom (mix, I think), and a German Shep. come running out towards us, of course. So my sis picks up Missie and just keeps walking. I tried to shoo the Pom back in, while watching the German Shep. cross the street to us too. Every person in the dog's yard is yelling "[dog's names] come back! Get over here!". We all had to pause in our efforts as a car passed by. I was assessing the dog's temperments while this is going on, and decided to chance touching them. So I took the Shepherd's collar and walked it across the street. A girl, who must've been 6 or 7, with a pacifier in her mouth (!), took the dog (almost bigger than she was). I turned around and went back to pick up the Pom (not a good idea, I know. But the dog had no collar, no one else was coming to get it. And it continued to follow my sis), handed it to the little girl. I turned to go, but was horrified to see an older boy (about 15, I think) raising his voice at the Shep. and nudging it with his foot, trying to get the dog to stand up and go inside the gate. The Shep. was one of the most submissive dogs I've seen, and I was so scared it was going to get aggressive if he kept threatening it with his body like he was. He was bending straight over the dog yelling at it! I started telling him to stop, and telling him to walk away and call the dog. He said the dog didn't listen (ha! I wouldn't listen to you if you treated me like that either! I'd of gone home with me ). The kid got slightly defensive, saying "you think I don't know my dog? He's rolling over 'cause he wants his belly rubbed! I got it, ok?". I don't even remember what all I said, as I was feeling panicky...So finally I crouched down and sat next to the dog (the kid had backed off by now, and the dog had turned to a laid down position), petting him underneath his head and talking to him in a real happy tone. When he made a move to get up, I praised him repeatedly, and after a few seconds he stood and followed the boy- just like I said he would. The boy was really nice. He crouched down and pet the dog while I was petting him, and told me the dog was 6 months old, and he used to have his mom yadda yadda yadda... I just felt terrible for that dog- his owners have no idea how to interact with him. *sigh* This world is so depressing. So there's my story. Just wanted to share to vent, and remind y'all to do the little things you can, when you can. I didn't do a good or thorough job of it, but I hope I did impart some knowledge. :-/ And being nice about it I've found is the best weapon. The boy calmed down when he realized how in- earnest I was, and that I wasn't insulting him, just trying to help. I wasn't all calm and friendly either, just earnest and kind. So remember that if you're ever having trouble getting through to someone- feed the ego, reap the rewards. ![]() |

the only neighbors I have issues with moved away finally. They had two Huskies and a Dalmation all tied to seperate trees, All three were very agressive, they layed in dirt all day, never went inside. I would see the man come out and play with them once and a while, so I think maybe the woman just didnt want them in the house. They were always fed, but never looked happy. they would get wierd clumps of mud stuck to their hair, etc. They just seemed very deprived, I think the land lord may have finally called the cops on it, cuz the dogs dissapeard, then like a week later they moved out.
every other neighbors are great, my one though often fogets to lock her gate so Gizmo the mini shnauzer(sp) and Jake the black golden get out and come sit in our front yard, but I do know these dogs, and they are very well behaved. |

I have BIG TIME issues with my neighbors and how they treat their dogs.
George is a Rottweiler/Shepherd mix, sweetest, most loving and clingy dog you'll ever meet.. He's left outside CONSTANTLY to roam the streets with Tusky, a purebred Carolina Dog (VERY rare breed) who belongs to George's owner's boyfriend. Bear is a heeler mix, she spends all her time jumping a 7 foot wooden fence, to get out and roam with Tusky and George. Tusky, George and Bear come over to my house, looking for love & treats.. George can open gates, so he gets into our yard every time we forget to put the padlock on the gate (We have to PADLOCK our gates to keep the neighbor's dogs out) and when George gets in, which I don't mind because both of them are such sweeties.. Tusky gets in. Tusky is VERY aggressive, particularly with strange dogs, and she has gone after Ripley and Buster twice and bit Buster once... So yeah, I have issues with my neighbor's dogs too. ![]() |
