The Cold within
A very old friend gave me this he said a friend wrote it and I thought it was very moving so wanted to share it with you
Six humans trapped by happenstance In dark and bitter cold Each one possessed a stick of wood or so the stories told The dying fire in need of logs The first woman held hers back. For on the faces round the fire, She noticed that one was black. The next man looking across the way, Saw one not of his church. And couldnt bring himself to give, The fire his stick of birch. The rich man just sat back and thought, Of the wealth he had in store. And how to keep what he had earned, From the lazy shiftless poor. The black mans face bespoke revenge, as the fire passed from sight. For all he saw in his stick of wood, Was a chance to spite the white. The last man of this forlorn group, Did nought except for gain. giving only to those who gave, was how he played the game. The logs held tight in deaths still hands. Was proof of human sin. They didnt die from the cold without, They died from the cold within. Words to ponder as we go about in life dont you think??? This poem really moved me, we are all so different but at times everyone needs a hand no matter what thier circumstances in life. Hope you enjoyed it ![]() |

I've always enjoyed this poem.
There's a stanza missing, that should be inserted between the church man and the rich man: "The third one sat in tattered clothes He gave his coat a hitch, Why should his log be put to use To warm the idle rich? " I've seen this poem attributed to a few different authors; the most cited is James patrick Kinney. And some sources list the author as unknown. Whatever the case, it's a good one. |

Wow, very thought compelling indeed. I find it amazing the things some people can put in words....it takes a very creative person to be able to create such a nice peice art.
