tricks
i know we talked about this before.. but we have LOADS of new members so what tricks does your dog(s) know?
Rocky knows ~sit by verbal and hand command ~all done by verbal and hand (all done because he is expected to sit there until i tell him to get up .. that way he doesnt sit and then get up 10 seconds later.. this is very handy) ~down verbal and hand command ~shake ~shake right ~beg (sitting on butt with paws in the air) ~up (completely on hind legs) ~show me belly ~and roll over.. this one i just taught him yesterday in a matter of 5 to 10 minutes.. i am very proud of my baby since he turns 7 years old this halloween, and i have only had him since last october and when he came to me he wasnt even potty trained and couldnt even sit on command. so, yea .. im a proud proud mommy what are you proud of your baby for?? |

Well.. Ripley is not only mommy's boy, but trickmaster extraordinaire. He knows basic obedience, and basic agility commands.
But, what I'm training him the most in, is tricks! He has a long list of cute tricks that he can do: (BTW he knows all basic obedience commands so i'm not including those) "tell me" - Bark "Tell me woo" - cute little growl/howling noise "tell me whine" - whiny/yippy noise "Shake your head" - speaks for itself "Flat dog" - lay down, hind legs splayed out, with head down "Hide" (still working on this one) - while in 'flat dog' mode, pull one paw up over his muzzle to hide his eyes "Roll over" "Spin" - spin clockwise "Twist" - spin counter clockwise "Weave legs" - weave in and out of my legs as I walk "Weave it (FAST)" - go through weave poles (faster if i tell him to) "Jump/ Go jump" - agility jumps, or jump over a stick or pole I'm holding "Paw" - lift his right paw in the air, and/or put it on my hand "Foot" - lift his left paw in the air, and/or put it on my hand "Launch" (Another work in progress) - jump up to my knee, and launch off of it into my arms or onto a chair "Go find Gramma" -Find my mom and harrass her. ![]() "Go find God Mommy" - Find my best friend/roommate and harrass her "Go find Mommy" - Find me and harrass me "Someone's out there!" - growl and bark menacingly "Bite me" - 'Attack' my hand, biting very gently "Bite her/him" - 'attack' the hand of whoever I'm pointing at "CEASE!" - Stop the 'attacking' "On your chair" - go jump on the chair I specify, and lay down "Go to bed" - go get under my bedspread "Ready to get out of bed?" - GROWL 'viciously' when I lift up the covers "I'll give you a treat!" - used with "out of bed". After he growls, I say "I'll give you a treat" and he bounds right out of bed and licks my hand. "Freeze!" (BIG work in progress) - STOP whatever he's doing and stand perfectly still As of now, that's all he knows. He's the fastest learner I've ever had and I'm VERY proud of him, learning all that in only about 5-6 months. He's my little baby. ![]() |

That is an impressive list there Rip's. I use the "freeze" command also. It is funny when she is running and she tries to freeze midstep and ends up falling over because of her momentum.
Other things she knows... We have several neighbors who have cats and some are nice friendly cats and some are spawn of the devil. Well, her first contact was with one of the very mean ones so she was scared to death of them. To get over this we figured out which one like to play and which one don't and use "sweet kitty" and "sour kitty" respectively, to tell Lucy if they are ok to play with or not. We also use sweet and sloppy for behaviors that have gradients. She has a "sweet heel" which is right on our leg and "sloppy heel" which means she can not pulling on the leash. She also has "sweet chase" which means she can catch what ever she is chasing or "sloppy chase" when she can only chase and not catch or pickup. |

Rip - It not only takes an extraordinary pup to do all those things but a pretty incredible person to have the patience and care to teach those things. That's awesome. I'm very impressed.
Boone knows sit, lay down, sit up, go to your home (his crate), belly (shows his belly) and outside. I'm starting to teach him to shake hands. He such a funny little rascal. ![]() |

Runt and Shredder know how to sit and sleep...
Kino can ~sit- hand command and spoken ~stay- ditto ~lay- both ~shake ~stand up ~jump- he runs and jumps into either mine or my fiance arms ~he climbs on my back- my fiance with pat my back then hell run and jump up on it then sit down, while im squatting, and put his paws on my shoulders. Hes resorted to trying this while I am standing up also, which doesnt work. ~he lets me stand up while hes on my back and he will let me give him a piggy back ride. ~fetch ~go to bed- he runs up the stairs ~back in the house- no matter where he is in the yard when I sa that he go RUNNING to the front porch to get back in the house. um thats all i can think of right now... |

Pug Mom
|
My boys know the basics. Sit, Stay, Down, Stay, etc. Winston will spin when I tell him to Circle. He shakes his paw, and does a lovely little wave (ever see that flea commerical where the Pug waves goodbye to fleas? he looks just like that, the way he does it lol).
Breakfast - of course they all know that Dinner - of course they know that one as well Wheres your kibble? - They run for the closet Where's the good stuff? (referring to what I add to the kibble - they run for the kitchen when I say that. Car Ride - they are always up for that. Gotta go get Grandma - that is Winston's thing. He knows hes da man - he always goes with me to 'get grandma" If we are on a walk, i ask "Want some Water?" they stop and wait for their water bottle. I'll say "gimme some sugar" and Winston turns his cheek to me so I can kiss him LOL McDonalds - they know that word very well lol Burger - relates to mcdonalds lol Who's da Man?!?! I ask that on walks, and Winston will bounce up and down like its ME its ME! A few little things I can think of offhand. |

My dogs have varying levels of trick knowledge
My hybrid Tara knows the most she can - "Play dead" - self explanatory "high five" - stand on back legs and hit paw on outstretched hand "tens" - as high five but with both paw "get em" - grab trouser leg of person pointed to "leave" applys to anything, food, toys, and the persons leg whose trousers shes puling on "get up" - jump over object pointed to "Get in" - move to side of road/pavement and lie down (very useful one) "wave" - self explanatory "roll over" " " "head down" similar to Ripley's "flat dog" "bring here" bring object/toy and place it in my hand "say hello" bark loudly "say please" bark quietly "sleepy time" - rubs her eyes with her paw "crawl" - move along the ground on her stomach "back" takes a step backwards "listen" - cocks head to one side "find Paper" - brings paper shaped toy "find hotdog" - brings hotdog shaped toy "find ball" brings tennis ball (still working on the other toys) "get Millie" - will grab my terrier by her collar and lead her to me - luckily millie doesnt mind "walkies" gets her lead down from its peg (quite a feat involves opening the back door and climbing onto the back of the sofa) "go away" - will run a hundred yards or so at full pace in the direction specified by pointing "Jump in" - will jump in the paddling pool "on here" - jumps onto specified hay/straw bale and lies down. Plus all the usual ones - sit, stay, lie down, stand, come here, heel, attention, In/out (of doors) The others know various ones from the list above, Jodie's speciality is high fives - she even uses the opposite paw. Bailey knows all the basics like sit, down, stay, stand, heel, finish, turn left/right, leave it,take it.
The other tricks she knows are: Sit pretty: sit up on her butt with paws in the air crawl: this one is sooo funny because she is so long and close to the cround anyway stop/go: We play red light green light with her and Mother May I shake Put your toys away: It only works for a few minutes. When she is done she takes them all back out again! The only trick I am working on now is play dead. I can't get her to put her head down. She can also play soccer goalie and stop a soft plastic ball before it goes in the net and she is getting pretty good at frisbee. Of course her favorite game is fetch and she will play this until your arm falls off. |
