No argument here! Handled it very well.. I think that person felt a little backed into a corner when you presented them with all of that information. I've found that when people find the other person to be right (and they don't want them to be) they become extremely deffensive. They probably pulled talking to the vets and saying they were healthier out of their hat. I think they were hoping you'd think "Oh! Well if you talked to vets then it should be okay".
Ignorant people these days... they came to you to ask info and then tell you you're wrong? *Humf!* Uggghhh, I really hope they don't come up with a huskydoodle, shepherddoodle, or a boxerdoodle! Ick! |

Actually, Sibes, they do have a Shepadoodle...
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/shepadoodle.htm Though thankfully it doesn't appear to anywhere near as popular as some of the mixed breeds. |

People like that make me so mad! I don't think you were rude or anything, but I know I'd be if someone e-mailed me asking for a "doodle". Unfortunately, most people don't know the difference between an "AKC registered dog" from your newspaper ads and a breeder with top show lines. And let's say that person isn't lying, and 6 vets reccommended mixes. But, 6 out of how many? 300?Poodles and Weimaraners are BEAUTIFUL dogs, but when they're bred together... oh lordy, I don't think so. I haven't seen many, but no 2 "doodles" look alike. I don't even know if the Labradoodles would be good for service dogs either, because not all of them have the poodle coat; I'm thinking a Wheaton or purebred Poodle would be more efficient. If my breed started being mixed intentionally, which it just may come to that, since they have nearly no health problems (not even HIP DYSPLASIA), I surely wouldn't be happy. |

Let me preface my reply with the fact that I unknowing bought a "hybrid dog" only to realize it after the fact. I love my boy he has gone above and beyond my expectations on every level, but will I buy another designer dog, of course not and I can't imaging why anyone(short of someone with EXTREME Alergies that hates poodles, even that is a MAJOR stretch for justification IMO) would want to mix a Worm with a poodle why ruin an already great thing? ......but to flat out say as fact that mixed breed dogs are less healthy than full breed dogs is kind of misleading. Every study I've read\looked and had explained to me says the mostly opposite, while there is a more "potential" problem with mixed breed dogs the actuall occurrence of issues is less likely due to genetic match up or whatever(inbreeding) This has been discussed to death here http://www.globalpaw.com/thread12150.html I started that topic and was very upset and defensive in the beggining but Bulldog showed me the light by the end of the thread. Most of the valuable info from is on the last 3-4 pages or replies. I'm not calling you a liar or anything even remotely like that, you have every right to feel the way you feel but the science doesn't "necessarily" support what your saying. I find sometimes I have to completely detach myself from my emotions before making statements based on science, genetics, math, engineering ect. The whole problem with Mix breed dogs IMO are A. The breeders most likely(ok 99% of the time) don't have the best intentions, it's all about the money $$$ B. We don't need any additional breeds of dogs, if I didn't live in a townhouse with specific needs I would have ALL rescue dogs period(I LOVE Lab\GSD mixes and there's tons of those available) C. The chances that these Mix breeders are using only TOP quality bitches and dogs are pretty unlikely and their methods for some of the mix's are all "secretive" and the outcome are more pot luck style than anything else and most are probably BRB's. D. Consistency, there's very little of it and that in it's self is a HUGE HUGE HUGE problem. This is all IMO and should not be interpreted any other way, like I said I will never "buy" another mix breed dog when there are 1000's of them availabe for the cost of getting them vacinated and fixed, but at the same time I"m not going to make possibly innaccurate blanket statments when there isn't any rock solid information backing up my claims even though the REALITY probably reflects YOUR\MY beliefs accuratly. now I will do my best to sway people away from these mixed breeds by telling them the facts I want them to hear but I will not outright lie to anyone.(No I don't tell people my mini bulldog is a designer dog nor do I call it a "Miniature english bulldog" to other people unless specifically asked what he is and they doni't settle for the initial generic answer. I hope I don't come off as a jerk this is not at all my intentions now that I know more I do regret buying a designer dog but I love him and were both very happy so I'm not going to beat myelf up over somthing thats now in the past. Now will I EVER promote the purchase mixed breed dogs, no absolutly not in fact quite the opposite. So are mixed breed dogs more unhealthy? IMO probably...but not "because" they are mixed breeds but because of careless breeding and a world full of stupid greedy people. |

However, I will check out the thread you posted. My current opinion is based on the fact that dogs have a certain genetic makeup. The genetic makeup of two dogs of the same breed is much closer than that of two dogs from different breeds. When trying to weigh and wade through the best dogs to breed, you have reduced the number of genetic possibilities when breeding two like breed dogs. When trying to reduce health problems, as all reputable breeders are, I would rather deal with the fewest possible unknown genes as possible. |

How sad. You were right on target with your responses. This person had his mind made up before he contacted you. I applaud you for taking your time and trying to educate him. It's a shame he didn't have the wisdom to listen to what you were saying. I certainly hope this fad of designer dogs fizzles soon. Other wise the shelters are going to be over flowing with doodles
