That is a very content snake. I wonder if he is saving his "snack" for a rainy day or is he just using the poor hamster for as a heat source? I'd assume the snake likes the warm little hamster to snuggle with.

You're not even supposed to feed hamsters to snakes, much less live ones. Makes me mad, to be honest. No prey species should have to live with it's predator. That's inhumane.

Well I think the prey mode will kick eventually.
A reporter on ce tried to show the wolf as not the bad mean predator, the people thought it is, and let grew up a wolf and a sheep. They were playing and all was nice, like theywere best friends, and the time when the reporter wanted to make some footage of these two playing, the wolve killed the sheep. not because it started out as pray, but the preymode and killing instinct took over .
I think that will happen eventually to that snake, too. or the Hamster either way it will be the same result.

This is a reputable and famous zoo. I hope they know what they're doing and how to take care of their animals. Gosh! Shall we send them an email? LOL.

Here's some interesting info on feeding snakes...nothing I found so far says anything detrimental about hamsters, other than the feeding of live rodents can cause injury or even death to a snake on account of them biting the snake and that pre-killed rodents are actually better, that it is a misconception that snakes need live food. They are scavengers also and eat dead things.

How odd. LOL I think if the hamster was uncomfortable living with the snake it would be determined to stay away from it but according to the article it actually sleeps on top of the snake. That's not a stressed out Hamster, if you ask me.

Cass.

A reputable zoo that, "promotes "cross-breed interaction," according to the article. What purpose does that serve towards the well-being and safety of the animals?

Kaz, I'm no expert, so just from what I've read... their fur is difficult to digest (and even the dwarf species obviously have more fur then mice and rats), and they're fatty for most snakes. And some time ago I read something about them being insufficient- not enough meat or something? I can't even remember.

The hamster isn't stressed until the snake's prey drive (and appetite) kicks in...

A friend of mine had a snake. They went to feed him a rat and he never ate it. After a few weeks the rat ate the snake.

Sometimes the laws of nature just don't seem to apply. I watched a show on Animal Planet a while back, it was about a lioness that had been exiled from her pack and she had adopted a baby gazelle. The baby eventually died of starvation so she adopted another one. She never hurt them, even guarded them to the best of her ability but sadly they were still dependent on their mother's milk. The second baby was eventually killed by another lion. It was a really poignantly sad show. You felt both bad for the gazelle and the lioness.

Yeah I saw that documentary. But didn't she eventually eat one of them?
