Where were you on 9/11?
Where were you when you first learned of the attacks on 9/11/01?
I live in Colorado Springs, which is known as one of the military centers of the country...I was a freshman in high school that year, and I remember I had P.E. in the pool the morning of the attack. I sleep with the radio on...and I remembered hearing some blurb about a small plane "knicking the World Trade Center". I didn't think much of it at the time... I got to school, P.E., as I said, and I heard from the life gaurd that something was going on...again, didn't think much of it. Then, about halfway through the period, we got an announcement over the P.A...it began to get serious to me.... The coach in charge of the pool ordered us all out early...in case an evacuation was ordered...the TV in the pool had no cable hookup, and all we could get with the reception was sound. So, for over 45 minutes, i stared at static on a TV and listened to faint voices talk about what was going on... The end of the period came, and I went to my next class...the way our high school works is that between 1st and 2nd period, there is a 25 minute free period for students to do what they want...it was the first and last time I ever saw students go to class early...i remember hearing two girls talk say that NORAD had an explosion...NORAD is the big radar defense center dug into one of the mountains in the Springs...about 30 miles from us...this wasn't true...but it freaked all of us more... School was pretty much done after that, we were put on lock-down, so no one could leave...I remember seeing several Humvees speeding down the street next to the school, most of the kids found an empty room in the new wing where the TVs had cable...I choose to listen to a radio... School was cancelled the next day... I have never seen such a sight in a public school since the Columbine Massacre...which was about 65 miles from my school...I was in 6th grade then... All my life, I've never known if there was a God or not, I never tried to figure it out. But, when I watched what happened on 9/11, one of my first thoughts was that the end of the world was coming, realize that all we heard for hours was "Plane hijaked, plane down" "fire, fire, fire" "towers down" "explosion" "death" "pentagon" "air force one" "a field in Pensylvania"... Well, where were you? How did you feel? |

Always room for one more

I was in bed. My mom woke my sister and I up and asked us to come to the living room. Something bad had happened, I think she said. I was in too jolly a mood that morning and joked that maybe the president had been shot (disclaimer: I support our president, and in no way, shape or form would find it funny if he, or anyone else, was shot. Just one of those flippant moments. I use humor to discourage feelings of fear). So my mum and siblings and I gathered in front of the TV watching the news. It took me a bit to piece together what happened, and I don't remember feeling any strong emotion particularly after that. It took a long time for it to sink in for me.
That's it, I guess. ![]() |

I lived in Las Vegas at the time.I woke up hearing my roommate in the other room, talking about a plane crash. I turn on the news, and right when I do, my parents call. They were upset, they odviously were really wishing I was closer. I worked swing shift in the meat dept of a grocery store. Went to work, some people I guess had a hard time getting to work, because the air force base had closed off some roads or something. The next day I was off, so I went down to the stable.. I needed some quiet time with my horses. So I spent the day with my horses, listening to the radio in the tack room, that talked about it. Thats how it was for me.

I was starting my first day of 6th grade, my first day with home studies.
My mom had told me that she was going to start getting me up at 6AM to start school. Well, when I finally woke up it was 9:30, and I heard the TV on, and I knew something was really wrong because I also heard my parents talking. When I went in there, the towers had just collapsed and the newscasters were actually crying and looked scared. I don't remember how I felt, I just remember that I was angry. I spent that day with Shiner, I think I walked about 10 miles that day with her, just trying to get that off my mind. |

I was in hospital in the UK.
Was watching the news live, and couldn't quite believe it. Made my illness seem so trivial at the time. Stilll can't believe the horror of it all to this day, sometimes we don't realise how lucky we are do we. |

I had insomnia and couldnt sleep all night before. I was watching the news when it first came on. My husband is an airline pilot. He was in Denver when it happened. I called him the second I realized what was happening and I got thru to him. He was still at his hotel and hadn't started his day yet. We sat on the phone together and watched the news. We were scared to hang up incase the phone lines jammed. (it took him 2 weeks to get home) I work for an airline too and went to work that day. It was scarey to see all of the planes parked all over the airport, squeezed into any spot they would fit. There were hundreds of planes on the ground and there were no passengers. It was like a twilight zone movie. I am a supervisor for my airline and I had to stay at work 24 hours a day for 3 days straight just to stay by the phones incase we had to do something quick. We have a t.v. and all I did was stare at it all day for 3 days. There were no passengers in the airport and it was scarey for me at night when the airport was so dark and I was alone. All I could do was watch t.v. and cry. We had to search every room in the airport for weapons. It took a long time. This was a very scarey time for me and my husband because we work for the airlines and we had to go through all of the changes that happened everyday since.

I was skipping class, and decided to stop into the main office to chat with the secretary (I was a senior so this was tolerated) and when I walked in there were 6 business men along with the principal and other office staff huddled around the little tv. They made me watch it for a minute. So I went to class, and turned the radio on, with out saying a word, everyone stopped to listen like they knew something was wrong by me comming in.
After that we went to our next class but stayed in those to watch tv, till we were finally sent home. I think its kinda odd how the steryotipical history questions to our parents is where were you when Kenedy was shot...well when we have kids doing history projects this will be our question. |

I was going out for breakfast with my then boyfriend. We walked into the local cafe and everyone was gathered around the TV. I saw the picture which was still and then they'd replay it. I remember asking what was that. And it was so surreal, so big that it just didn't register for a while. Awful.

I was sleeping when my boyfriend called to tell me. I remember that day at work a news radio station was on all day so that we were up to date on what was going on. I remember when I first heard about it, I tried to call my friend who lives in NYC. Of course all the phone lines were packed and I couldn't get through.

I was in the 10th grade.....My ArtII class...first class of the day. Some other teacher came from down the hall and told us to turn the tv on. All of my classes had the tv on except for my last class....we had a test so she turned it off. The 1st tower fell when I was in American History class. I had no idea that they would fall.
