question in relation to losing dogs
OK. my question is, if a dog has the implated chip init, does that mean it doesn't have to wear a coller with tags? I am planning on having my dog within an invisible fence, but if it gets out, then I don't want to have a problem if I don't have tags onit when I'm supposed to.

My dogs are microchipped, but they always their collars on when they're outside. Some people don't know to look for a chip, so I always like to have as much ID on them as possible.
However, when my dogs are unattended, I take their collars off. I've heard a couple stories of dogs getting their collars caught on something, and although I make sure my dogs' collars aren't too loose, I'm still worried. |

I would keep the collar on anytime your dog is outside. Some dogs are not affected by the shock from an electric fence and will blast right through for freedom. If someone finds your dog they can call you immediately and you can get it back. If the dog doesn't have a collar, someone is more likely to take it to the pound or even keep it.
Just something to think about with an electric fence. It might work to keep your dog in the yard but it won't stop other stray dogs from coming in too. Please keep an eye on your new pup when he is out. |

I am not a fan of invisible fencing.. I don't think it is as reliable as a 'real' fence .. I think I would definitely have tags on the dog, plus the microchip, in that situation. Many folks still don't know or understand microchips, and do not think to go have the dog scanned when they find it running loose.
My guys do not wear collars or harnesses at home with their ID.. BUT they are indoors, only out supervised, and that is behind a 6 ft privacy fence, padlocked gates and steel dug into the ground. |

I'd still have his tags on. If someone just found it on their property and thought it was cute, they might just think it is a stray and keep it, without taking it to someplace to get a microchip check.
Dogs can also get tatoos (on their ear, I believe), and at least that would be seen. I might do that with a dog that has long ears that fold, but I'm not sure I'd do it with a cropped breed. You also have to worry about if it got into the wrong hands, someone might try to "re-crop" the ears and cut the tattoo off. |

I would be safe and keep a collar and tags on the dog. If you are affraid of hanging or anything like that, they do make break away collars. I would not trust an invisible fence. If your dog was out and some neighborhood kids came and were inside the invisible fence and something happened it would probably not be considered enough preventitvely by the courts. If it is all you can do b/c of local fence laws then it is def. better then nothing.

I'd leave a regular collar on as well. Most places require you to have at least the rabies tags on anytime the dog is off your property anyway whether or not you put an ID tag on as well is up to you, but since the collar is on with one tag, might as well put the other tag on as well. Much easier to get the dog back to you. Sometimes the chips can migrate once implanted and they might miss it. Not sure how often it happens, but I heard it can.

I know many poeple with small and large dogs that invisi fence works great, the problem is the IS TRAINING INVOLVED. Most poeple just by them and expect them to work like magic, I just don't like when people make blanket statment like "xxx does not work for anyone just because it didn't work for me and my dog" |
