thanks
ok so my post did finally go threw. so i am new to the community and i have a loving boxer who just had 5 gourgeous pups. i was kind of in need of some advice for she is a rescue and i have never had to go threw the birthing thing. well big paws and cassie assisted me and i am more than thankful for there help. wow i learned alot about a big dog in labor and how long it can take. funny thing is every one was telling me she would do it on her own. yeah right, the stink was panting really hard and would not get off me. so we ended up all nite with a laboring dog. but hey i am so amazed at what a great mom she is. once again thanks for your assistants guys.
when i get pics i well post and show off my great mommie and her new babs. ![]() |

Congrats!!
I'm not sure of your previous posts but I'll give you a few pointers, you may know this already. Make sure the room is warm enough and have the area with clean blankets. If the mother is beside the pups most of the time, the temperature is ok at no less than 75, if the pups don't have the benefit of the mother close most of the time, make it 85 at least for the first couple of weeks. The pups can't regulate their own temperature that young and can chill very easily. Also, if you are planning on docking tails and getting dew claws removed, get in soon. It should be done no later than 5 days of age. Keep an eye on the pups and if you can, weigh them to make sure none of them are losing weight and appear healthy. Even if there is a runt, it should still gain weight even if not as much or as fast as the others. Also keep an eye on the mother, and make sure she is drinking plently of water. The mother should be watched also, make sure she taken care of as well. She will clean up after the pups' messes for the first few weeks, but it will get quite messy for you from then on, once you have started weaning them off of the mothers milk. It is also a good idea if you trim the puppies nails when they are looking long or sharp. Even if it is just a nip off of the top. You don't want the puppies scratching her or causing an infection on her teats. So good luck, and i'm sure there are plenty of people willing to offer any advice on anything you need it. Can't wait to see the pics!! |
