Thinking about another dog...
So I know I won't be able to get another dog for a few months, but I figure it could not hurt to start thinking about what I want. I really would like a doberman, but still being in an apartment situation it is really difficult to find a landlord willing to accept them. I was wondering if anyone had some sugguestions of a breed I might have over looked??
I am thinking a medium to large breed, but no bigger then a lab (Shelby has this thing about really big dogs). I would like a medium to high exercise seeing how I plan to run them every morning and dog park every afternoon, but at the same time could do ok in a decent sized apartment. I am not affraid to train a stuborn dog. Do not really care about grooming, but short hair is prefered. Hopefully a breed that is good with other dogs, and fairly accepting of other animals. I recently have started considering a weimaraner (Shelby seems to love the breed, and they fit most my criteria). Shelby also does great with Golden Retrievers, and they are usually great dogs. Thanks in advance ![]() |

Um... once again I suggest a Springer Spaniel.
Yes, I am biased. But they fit your description. There are plenty that need homes through www.essrescue.org (admittedly, this is the northeast region link, but if you check out their "Resources" link, it will direct you to all sorts of info and other links).Good luck with your search. You'll have to let us know when you make a decision! |

What about a Cattle dog or a cattle dog mix? Medium sized, high energy, love to excercise and run, very intelligent and easy to train. And they are very loyal to their masters as well as any other but you know what I mean

Irish Setter? They love running, aren't much trouble to groom (despite some long feathering on them), very intelligent, fairly easy to train although not 'poodle' quick (if ya know what I mean) and are FANTASTIC with dogs and other animals (as well as people). They might be a little big, I don't know. The females aren't that tall. They're about the same size as a Doberman I think....give or take an inch.

What about a dalmation? They were bred to run long distances at a consistent pace.

barrett - good idea I had not thought about them
mrsgrubby - couldn't agree more... Mellie-Something about growing up w/ my grandparents cocker spaniel has left a bad impression of spaniels, they are suprisingly not overerly abundant in the area as far as rescues. Shan-It just seems like most I have met are dog ok but not really run and play w/ other dogs type dogs. It seems like if there is a tennis ball around 20 ddogs could be fighting 5 feet away and they would be oblivious. Cass- I love most setters I have met, but I think they would just be a little over the largest size i would want. Beautiful goofy dogs though. Schwe-I will def be giving them thought, but they are not overly popular around her and I have not seen many in rescues aroud me. bb-I have met a couple dif weims in the last few weeks, and they are growing on me. |

Sounds like you're becoming infatuated with Weims though. Good luck on your search. Can't wait to see pictures when you eventually add another furkid to your family. Cass. |

I don't think a greyhound would be the best choice as a running partner. They tend to be sprinters rather than endurance runners, and probably wouldn't do too great on long jogs. They are often great apartment dogs, though.
Weims are gorgeous! Good luck with your search! |

Yeah, I see what you are saying. They aren't a breed for everyone. I have a very sweet tempered dog friendly one because he has been socialized to no end but he is ball and frisbee obsessed LOL! ![]() |
