Ztratili jsme kontakt. Hledala jsem je, ale nenasla. Oni uz cesky vubec nemluvi. Jak Vy? Odkud? Jezdite na navstevu? Neni nad Prahu! Zdravi eva |

Hi Schnaps!
Oh gee....ya caught me. Hee hee hee. I think you better translate what you wrote. I really can't read and write Czech and can only speak and understand 'malo.' I was being a smart alec. Now you caught me! :shiver: So you came here in 1968? That was when the Russians closed the borders, right? My ex hubby left then and lived in Wein for 5 years then came here. I was married to him for 21 years and the culture and language was part of my life, but we didn't use it enough so I am not fluent, but could manage to get by when his mom came to visit. She came about 4 times and each time she came, I was forced to pick up more because she and I would be alone all day while hubby was at work and she was a lot of fun. She did better with English than I did with Czech. LOL. One time when we were in Costco, I heard some people talking Czech and listened very carefully as we were walking along with our basket. Then I smiled and said, "Ajoy, jak se mash (sp?)" They smiled and started a long chat. Then they found out I really didn't know what all they were saying. They thought my accent was accurate and thought I could really carry on a fast conversation. I had to tell them to wait a minute. My poor hubby told me later that he was afraid I would do that as we were walking. He was embarrassed by his outgoing, obnoxious wifie. LOL. Anyhow, it's great to have you here on this board. It will be fun. Carrie |

Never mind
You started so well, I said to myself, here comes a native. English is far easier to learn, it has no genders, not much grammar and so many people speak it, so many versions of it, one can get away with anything. Certainly in Australia. I tried to teach Czech to my husband, who is very English, and failed miserably. The only sentence he knows is : "Slecno vy jste velmi opila" which means "Miss you are very drunk". Says a lot, doesnt it? When my mother arrived for a visit, he was showing his skills, by then he forgot what it meant.Told her she was very drunk, and she nearly fell off a chair. That on top of jet lag. Am looking forward to reading the forum. Some of the debate strike a chord. Much the same everywhere I guess. Too few pushing around too many. Must not rant. Better put the doggies to bed. Cheers |

Ha ha ha ha ha.....that's too funny, "miss you are very drunk." Yes, my hubby taught me all the bad words first thing. I embarrassed him further by spouting them off to his brother. Do prdelli prosset! Can't spell. (uh-oh...I hope none of the moderators edit that) I have learned almost any noun you can think of and things that you say to children, like, be careful, eat, are you hungry, all the body parts, do you want this or that, come, go to bed, dobrou noc, etc....just about anything.... so I can make myself understood and can understand, but it's from ear, not the written..... but the grammar is often messed up.
Yes, there were some jerks on here that came to cause trouble, but they've been eliminated. LOL. So, now we're back to normal. |

LOL! Thanks. My spelling is atrocious. It must be a real chore to figure it out. Do prdele prace.... Oh yes, I've even gotten that one down....the rolled R and everything. I find certain things will come out of my mouth and I didn't translate in my mind. They just come straight out. "Be careful" is one and some of the naughty phrases. I wish I had learned more. (learned more useful stuff, not more naughty things. LOL) It is a fun, but difficult language.
