Oh...poor Bowie had a rough start didn't he. How can people do that to a dog. He's lucky you rescued him. It's so hard to cut the food back sometimes. When they're inactive, they just don't need the same calories. So, if their output of calories is less than their intake, naturally they'll put weight on or not lose it. But of course, you already know that. My Lab gets about 1-3/4 cups a day divided into two meals. It looks like she's really getting gipped, so I add something to fill her up that has little or no calories like green beans, non fat cottage cheese, something to make her think she's getting a decent sized meal.

Grace,

hypothyroidism is something that has a fair amount of prevelence in Dobermans. It's one of their many health issues. But it is controlable with meds. I haven't heard that hyperthyroidism happens.

yeah youre telling me - tell BOWIE! at his weight, 2% for inactive dogs is just about 2 lbs. to get him DOWN, i need to feed him more like 1.75 lbs or less, at this activity level. so it goes to show how much is individual metabolism.

Wow, poor Bowie's been through a lot. I never would have guessed he'd been through all those surgeries, or that he was anything but a healthy, happy doberdude... You've got an awesome dog, there.

My three get a raw diet (reccomended by their holistic vet!) along with some Bench & Field. They're doing great! I LOVE RAW! LOL

The girls' vet, Dr. B., wrote a book about raw diets, and there are recipes for raw diets (one for a cat and for certain weights of dog, lol), so we bought it, and the girls are doing GREAT! They absolutely love their food, are silky/soft, and have basically no health problems. I will continue to feed all of my dogs and cats (though I do not have a kitty friend at the moment) a raw diet, along with NATURAL KIBBLE! Woot.

I would do raw , but it takes time to prepare each day , and I rarely even cook my own meals
Dr. B. reccomends making the meals monthly and freezing them. Then you thaw them a few hours before you feed. (this makes it so much easier!) But even if you can't do raw, you can by bones for the dog (eaten outside--very messy!), and toss some fresh shredded veggies in with his/her food. My girls also get tuna every other day, which they love. Once you get the hang of it, feeding a raw diet isn't all that hard!
