Mulroony... running question
Hey there,
I know you're a runner so I figured I would ask you about this. I decided to finally make the commitment and start running again. I ran 1.5 miles today and yesterday with Sophie. To be honest, it was more of a jog because I'm so out of shape. Soph trotted the whole time, never breathed with her mouth open. Yesterday the temp was in the mid 40's and today it is in the mid - high 30's. Both today and yesterday I have had excruciating pain right after my run in my inner ear canals. I googled this and found that it was common with runners in cold weather (I don't have TMJ). Do you know the physiological cause of this? Also, will ear warmers help to resolve this issue? I have sensitive ears and hate flying because the altitude changes during take off and landing reduce me to a sniveling heap. lol. I was really looking forward to setting up a running regime for Soph and I to get back into shape (she's in great shape, I just need the company. ) but I don't know if I will be able to deal with the ear pain every day. It's not something to look forward to! haha. Thanks in Advance, Lesya |

Sorry to hear that, and shooting pain in my lungs and throat is the reason I do not run when it is under 40. I have had little experience with this, but I do think I might know why it is happening. You might want to research proper breathing techniques for distance running. I think you are not getting enough oxygen while you are running. Part of being able to run long distances successfully is to properly condition your lungs. Search around and see what you can find about breathing techniques. They will seem strange and are usually not "natural" (aka bent over huffing and puffing) and take focus. **There might also be exercise they sugguest prior to running to increase lung capacity** Did you feel light headed while running?
I am guessing you are not wearing any type of ear phones while running? I had a couple pairs that caused horrible ear pain while running. If so try it w/out them. That is all I really have, is there pain anywhere else like lungs, sinus, etc? |

Ok, I run all year long...
When it is cold out I begin my run with ear warmers on, as I get really hot I take them off. As long as I start with them on, and don't take them off until I am really warm, I have no problem with the ear pain any more. |
