Question about urine smell in yard.
I have a small yard and 2 dogs, when it rains I can smell a hint of urine. What would be the best way to remove this smell without harming my pets who use the yard?
Would lime sprinkled onto the yard get rid of the smell? |

lime pellets (or garden lime) will neutralize the odor of the pet urine and give your grass a nice rich green appearance. Just spread it liberally on the ground and let nature take it's course. For quick pee spot fixes I keep a pail of water with two tbsp of baking soda mixed in. Then when they tinkle I just sprinkle this solution on the spot right away and no more brown grass.......

I would use Dolamite lime because it's a little bit granular, a little heavy and it will wash right down into the soil fairly quickly, has a little residual effect. I'd make sure it's watered in well before the dogs walk on it.
Sheltiemamma, that's a great idea. I wonder though....in my case, lots of times I don't see my dogs pee so I don't know where they did it. Would there be something I could use all over my grass to prevent brown spots? Like more potash? Is that the same idea as baking soda? I hate those brown spots and I have lots of lawn, which I work so hard to get nice and green and weed free. Dogs use to be trained to go in one spot but because of the huge amount of snow, (long story) it wrecked their training. |

I'm curious, is there any area in particular that is stronger than another or does it just seem to be all about?
Last summer we had many really humid days and for the first time I noticed this same thing when I'd go out back with the dogs, I tracked it down to my little doxie who would pee on the cement by the patio door, same spot day in and day out and thats where the odor was coming from. Started washing the area once every three days or so with a combo of bleach and water and the smell stopped. Only had to do it for about two weeks and now just whenever I notice the smell coming back. |

If it's one particular area of the yard their going to maybe directing them to another spot for awhile would help? Just sounds like their really saturating one spot. |

Hmmmm.. can't imagine two dogs making much a smell.. but if you say it smells, then it smells LOL.. We have a total of what.... 8 dogs here. Smallish backyard that they use mostly.. not usually a smell... though sometimes in the spring, if the dogs have been using like one shovelled spot in the yard to avoid the deep snow, and it warms up, I do smell it for awhile, but then I hose it down real well and the smell dissipates. The lime thing though.. I might try that.
