New addition
Well, as some of you may have read in the other thread about the husky puppy. We didn't acquire that pup... but we did take in Ike, the husky that constantly escapes. We had called animal control a couple weeks ago to find out if they were able to seeze (sp?) the dog from them, and give him to us. They said the only legal way to do that, was to ask them if they wanted to keep the dog, or hand him over to us. So when the lady sent her young daughter, and two younger sons over to our house at 8:30 at night, to pick him up we told them that they need to learn how to keep the dog contained. That it's not that hard to put him on a leash, or supervise him while in the yard.
So he shows up today at 7:30 this morning. We are having a new water heater installed, so it's a bit upside down in the house today. So my mom goes to take Ike back home at 2. There are 3-4 cars in the drive way, and hear music inside (she said it may have been from a car, but wasn't sure) and knocks. Nobody answers. So I call my friend Casey (she used to own the dog when she lived with her dad, now she moved out and doesn't even care about him) and asked her if they even wanted the dog. She said we'd have to talk to her dad, so we call him to ask. She talks to the lady that always is there with him, and she "sounded" excited that we were willing to take him. She told us that she was going to go and talk to Dean (Casey's dad) and call us back. So, they called back, and asked "Well can the kids still come by to see him, and blah blah". My mom said, "If you see my car here, then yes it's no problem, but if the black car is here, don't because my husband has a short temper with young kids." So, they gave us his feeding bowls, his food, and his leash and collar. So we now have 3 huskies! My mom tried to see how well his training was. Casey had him trained pretty well as a pup, but now he doesn't even sit, he shoots through the door before everyone (humans). So we're going to be doing some training with him, and also going to get him switched over to a better food (she said she pays $50 a bag for this food at Pet Supermarket.) because he does need a tad bit of weight put on him for his size. He's a WONDERFUL dog. He loves attention and hates being shut off outside. Sarge doesn't really get along with him, but it's because it's another male, and Ike respects Sarge as alpha male. Sheiba doesn't mind him, and like I said, Denali LOVES him. We are going to set up Denali's crate and put it in a different part of the room to keep him in, since Sarge doesn't get along well with him. But, he's SOO full of energy. You can tell he's never played with because he loves attention and loves to play (he's about 2 years old). He wants to play so badly, but Denali likes to rest now and then, so he sits and pesters her. But the funny thing is, when he's here, he doesn't run off. He stays in the yard, comes when called, and if I take him out front off leash.... he won't leave the yard, and comes when called. He's such a good dog, he just didn't have the right family.I do have to say that they did try and keep him home. We suggested that they neuter him, because he may be wondering because of females in season, so they did that. But, that didn't last long. So they got him microchipped, had the fence fixed, but the one thing they still didn't understand was that he is a husky! He can jump a fence, he can dig under the fence, he will not stay in the yard if he's off leash. They would never take him out on a leash.... they just expected him to go potty and come back in. Didn't happen. But here, he never tries to escape. But, that's about all of it. If any of you don't know/haven't heard about Ike. I'll be happy to explain to you what is going on. I have pictures of him from when I baby sat him, but they are on my computer and I'm at my boyfriends house right now. So I'm soooo excited! We can finally give him a nice home! |

Well, I just got home, and Ike is a mess.
He doesn't respond well to commands AT ALL, he barks and howls to try and get Denali to play, he doesn't seem to have a schedule, and doesn't seem to realize that humans are alpha. He's not aggressive, but when walking through a door, he rushes and tries to be first and he doesn't give a hoot if you're calling him. I tried to take his collar and gently pull him to me to get him to come, and he freaked out. Now, he has a choke chain and I had it to where it was pulling out from the front of him, and he gets on his hind legs putting his paws over my arms and flipping all around. You can obviously tell that he's been punished that way. He pounces at the kitten, so he can't be left alone with her. He needs ALOT of work, and I think once he gets onto a schedule and gets some training that he should settle in. He REALLY doesn't seem to be upset about being away from home. He's just hangin out on the bed right now. Gets down now and then and wants out, but he wants to go play with Denali, and at 12:30 in the morning ... I don't think so! LOLUnfortunately for the night we had to seperate Bubby into my dads room, Denali and the kitty in the living room with my mom and Sheiba and Ike are in here with me. Sheiba doesn't mind him being in here, but doesn't like him up on the bed, which is fine. I don't want him sleeping up on the bed with me (or anyone) until he's learned who's alpha in the house (us!). But he's a smart little booger. He knows how to open our front screen door, as well as open a door that's not totally shut. Makes me frustrated to think that they didn't keep training up with him. When I babysat him a couple years back he was wonderful. I guess we haven't had him here long enough to realize what kind of work he needs. But this is all new to him, so it should take time.I'll keep you posted, and I'll post a couple of older pics I have of him in the pictures forum. |

Well, things were a bit better this morning. Sarge was constantly growling at him, so I was trying to distract Sarge a bit. I took the two of them on a walk together to get them to "bond" a little better. We took all of them to the dog park and Ike loved it. He just didn't know what to do with all those smells and different dogs. And thankfully enough... Sarge and him can be in the same room together without Sarge growling.
So I'm happy to see that. I guess I'm just going to have to start walking the two of them together and more trips to the dog park! But, he's learned to stay out of the kitchen while someone is in there. The only thing that definetly needs work, is him chasing the kitten. I mean, yeah, Sheiba will chase her, but Ike uses his paws WAY too hard. That's a big no no! But Sheiba watches over her. If Ike gets near her, Sheiba will get off the couch and get in between them. Not aggressive unless Ike persists to try and paw the kitten, and Sheiba turns and looks at him, give him that "look" with a little bit of teeth to show, and that's it. He backs off. I guess most of it may be because this is all new to him, but he definetly needs work on his training. We are going to start him on the NILIF program. Oh, and he finds its a good way to get your attention by... well, it's not really barking, more like a bark and a howl put together. I don't know, LOL It's hard to explain, but it's piercing to the ears! So we're trying to get him to stop that. I've found though, that ignoring him works, and if he persists, I make him come lay down next to me. But, Denali doesn't realize to just ignore him. She just sits there and does her Chubaka and he just loves it ![]() But, that's about all of it! Happy Super Bowl Sunday! |
