Okay I did a big no no....well yeah okay I did.
I went over to my buddies house to hang out and he had a rat there taht was to be snake food. It was a baby girl rex (curly hair) cuter than cute. I picked her up and didn't let her down. My friend was pissed but I argued with him for about 30 minutes. I told him if he just got rid of his snake things would be alot easier for me....lol. I finally just threw 7 bucks at him and took the little girl home. What makes this a no no is that it came from the pet store which I strongly dislike, plus the money I gave him will more than likely be spent on another rat from the same store (since there is only one here). I should know better than to buy into thier horrid scheme, but once I post the pics of my little girl you'll understand how I couldnt let her be snake food. Plus he tried twice to feed her to his snake and his snake wouldnt eat. He swears the snake is hungry but I beg to differ. The little girls name is Anne Frank because my friend with the snake well his partner told me it was like a rat holocaust (sp?) So we called her Anne Frank which made my buddy the snake owner even more angry. LOL So now I have 7 rats ![]() |

YOU GO GIRL! And keep saving those rats
Though I don't think that buying a rat from a pet store is a big deal the only thing that bothers me that come out of the petstores are those puppies. I have always bought my small caged animals from a pet store rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, and fish too. ![]() |

Pet stores are supposed to carry feeder rats which are different than the pet kind. Also tell him it isn't such a good idea to feed a live rat to his snake. The rat can inflict some serious wounds. Usually you feed them dead, dipped in chicken broth. Yummy!

Just remember with all your girlie rats, you're bound to have mammary tumors popping up eventually. Be prepared financially! Congrats on little Anne (next time run faster so you don't have to pay
Hahahaha!). Can't wait for pictures!Shan, just like puppy mills, there are rodent mills just as bad (including guinea pigs, bunnies and chinchillas. Plus ferrets). The miller mass produces the animals with no thought towards temperament or health, and so despite our compassion, purchasing these animals just continues the suffering. There are literally hundreds of rats just in my state, in shelters and rescues, desperately needing homes. Same with mice, hamsters, gpigs, bunnies and chinchillas (gerbs and ferrets are illegal in my state). Pet stores/chains are not a good place to obtain pets, period. Nevermind quarantine issues with the rodents. Deadly airborne viruses are often carried by rodents in pet store chains. Jamila probably won't have to worry about that, since the rat was at someone else's home for some time-- perhaps enough time for it to show symptoms should it be ill. Calgal, a domestic rat is a domestic rat. There is no difference in sizes, and there are no "fancies" superior to feeders. Stores usually seperate the plainer colored rats and mice to designate as "feeders." And I absolutely agree about feeding live! |

You know after I typed what I was thinking at the time I should have said that I have always bought my small animals from a privately owned pet store. A family owned pet place where the owner bred and sold his own small pets and didn't over breed them. I'm sure that their are rodent mills but rodents don't bother me as much as puppy mills do. I'm not saying it is right to breed crazy rodents but it just isn't something I think about . |

With the lack of rescue or good breeder, a privately owned pet store is the next best thing. I still don't ever recommend supporting them (Jamila, please don't take ANY of what I've said personally. It's not like I've NEVER purchased an animal from a pet store--which isn't even what you did.
). Shan, you're also in a state where there are rats (for one thing) coming out of the rescue's ears. And just 'cause they're small doesn't mean they don't suffer just as much as a doggie! |

We had pets rats years ago. They are lovely pets. The only bad thing I can say about pet rats is that they only live a few years. It's very heartbreaking.

Yeah I know where these rats come from and I hate the environment. I am quarntineing (sp?) Anne Frank a.k.a. Frankie. I'm not about to risk the health of my others. Frankies licking the back of my neck as I type..LOL...it tickles. Anyways this was the rat mill I got "shut down" HA they just moved where they couldnt be found...darn them.
As for my buddies snake.....me and his partner have been slowing implanting the idea of getting rid of her. He doesnt do anything for her anyhow. She shed last month and her skin it still in that cage. Ugh I could go on but will spare you and give you pictures of Frankie instead. I know what I did and why I shouldnt buy into that horrid circle of animal torture yet I kinda didnt cause so far my buddy hasnt gotten another rat. Oh btw great feedback from everyone and TinyAlbinoDancer I didnt take what you said personally. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

She sure is a cutie! Sure she's a rexie? Thanks for not taking it personally. I didn't want to detract from the goodness of what you did, but where there's opportunity to educate, I must interject! lol Thanks for understanding.

Yeah Im not positive shes a rex but she has curly hair here and there and some curled whiskers. Either way she's a sweetheart.
a side note: I hate the pet store she came from. They have a mill that Ive been secretly working on shutting down again. I hate that these places exist. They dont see any of the rats they breed as pets. They breed all kinds and call them all food. UGH! Oh and my buddy hasnt attempted to get any more. Im gonna look some info up for him on feeding his snake a better diet. He just doesnt understand!!! |

I'm not a big fan of rats but she is a cutie!
I dont' see how people can feed live animals to snakes and reptiles and stuff....*shudders* I'm glad you were able to rescue her. She sure looks like a happy little girl! |

I know I'm gonna be hated for this, but reptiles are animals too and they need to be fed. Rodents are a food source for them so whether we like it or not it's necessary for them to be bred to feed the reptiles. I see nothing wrong with breeding rats just for snake food. As long as the animals are taken care of before they're used as feeders.
