Biking is going just great!
I know that the post about me starting to bike with Gunnar was lost so I thought I would give you all a quick update. It is going great! He is even doing better at training now tthat he is getting top notch exercise everyday.
I am enjoying it so much, we can cover so much more distance in such a short amount of time and he is just totally pooped out afterwards! We have had no problems with him pulling at all and even when he tries it doesn't seem to disturb me on the bike at all! Much praises to biking with your dog ! |

Well, that's just fantastic. I can see how much better that would be than walking on a leash....lots more exercise. How is it that if he pulls, it doesn't mess you up on the bike? That would scare me. But of course, I have a long history of serious injuries requiring hospital visits from bike accidents. I am not a good bike rider. LOL.
Anyhow.....this is great and I'm so glad you're having fun. Are you wearing a helmet? (worry, worry) LOL. |

Yes, I wear a helmet, even though I hate them and I know I look like a dork, but better a dork then a head injury!
It seems that the momentum of the bike and my weight on it are enough to cancel out any pulling for the most part. We don't go super fast, might break into one or two jogs for a block or so, that helps keep us safer as well and I tend to ride in the alleys where there are less distractions. Although with the few times we have went he has pretty much ignored anything interesting, he seems very focused on moving forward. I even took Katya for a spin through a few allys and it went really well! She was so tired afterward, she is used to leisure walking, sniffing, poking along so it took a lot out of her to just keep moving at an even pace. We still go on walks though, we bike first thing in the morning so he is all tuckered out when I leave to run errands, etc. Then we have our nice walk in the evening. It is amazing how much better behaved they are when they are getting enough exercise! |

Did you get one of those bike attachments that you hook the dog to? I don't even have a bike
but am buying one, along with a basket for the Yorkies and bike attachment for Jasmine. |

The hubby is finally convinced T-Bone the dobie needs more exercise and is planning on taking him biking this weekend. We have a bike trail close by.
Did you toughen up Gunner's pads before biking? I was warned that dobie feet need some conditioning before major running like that. Since the trail isn't "natural" but paved I worry. |

Yes, you do need to build up the pads first. Me and Gunnar go at a trot instead of a full out run and I check his pads periodically as well as checking him for any lameness.
If you already have been walking your dog a decent distance before you start biking then the pads should be somewhat toughend already but I would suggest no full out running for at least two weeks. Just like an athlete you want to condition them first! |

Kinda nice to know others on here enjoy biking.. I am very much into the mtn biking end of it... I hit the trails quite a bit. Am considering purchasing a road bike, as I like having a choice... do I want to take the roadie, or take my bike version of a hummer up in the hills? LOL It's a pretty big passion for me. However, looks like my companionship will be 2 legged.. I don't think the pugs are up for it. LOL
