Going to pick up BESO!!!!!!

Oh my gosh! I am so excited! We get to go and pick up Beso! We have to get the cats vaccinated first. I didn't know they required it here.

Anywho, I have my camera charging as we speak and heading up there as soon as my mom gets back from her errand!

I have been waiting, what seems like FOREVER to bring him home! I really hope the other 3 hit it off with him... and I know not to rush things with these guys, or else I'll make matters worse! I was on a forum for pitbulls the other day and read up on proper steps to introducing a bully (I think it could apply for most any dog though). Introduce one at a time, praise for good behavior/submissive behavior, if things get "tense" to distract them and reward them for turning away... keep it positive. I am going to be very very excited. Not necessarily nervous though. I'm going to try and calm myself before going though, so the dogs don't interpret the wrong message. Didn't some of you say that when you're in the ring, you usually suck on a mint, or chew mint gum to help soothe your nerves? I think I may try that.

But be prepared for lots of pictures either tonight or tomorrow!!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Beso did not work out.

Beso had seemed fine at the initial greeting. Also was fine all of last night. The only thing yesterday was that he was not very friendly towards the cats --- but we figured, it can be worked with.

Well, this morning he seemed to change his attitude towards the others. He was becoming extremely possessive of everything that he considered his.. a toy, a bone (both put up), then it was the couch, then it turned into the living room. He respected Sheiba as alpha female, but challenged Ike, and challenged Denali. He was baring his teeth at them if he didn't want them doing something. VERY dominant dog --- but ever so sweet to people. My little Tags was very traumatized, as he had chased her yesterday out of the fence and she went up a tree. She would not leave my room and was paranoid at any noise.
He got into it with Denali this morning, over a plastic bottle she was chewing. He saw her chewing it and just instantly went over and fought her. My mom had to pull him by the hind legs to get him away from her.

We made the decision to bring him back to the shelter. It was not only not fair to our animals (and not safe!), but it wasn't fair to him. We told the shelter staff that he just needs to be placed into a home with no other animals. We were so sad that we had to bring him back, but knew we had to do it.

I was fully prepared for an event like this. He's just very typical of his breed... I don't blame him for being the way he was. It's his nature. The shelter said we have 30 days to look for any other dog we may be interested in at their shelter. After that 30 days, it's non-refundable, and I guess you can consider it a donation to them. We are keeping our eye out more for a puppy, and male of course. We figure that it may be better to raise a puppy in the home, so it can grow up to learn the others. I am particularly interested in Boxers... as well as a pitbull/mix pup. But more so to the boxer. But if we happen to see a pup that is more suitable for our home environment, then we will give it a go. We're in no rush --- just going to keep looking for now.

I did manage to get a few pictures of Beso while he was here. He is SUCH a sweet dog. VERY strong and smart. He learned his new name by this morning. He was maybe a tad too skinny, as you could see a little bit of his spine, but that can be changed with a good diet and some exercise.

Carrie: Beso is spanish for kiss. I named him Beso because that was the first thing he did when I put my hand in the cage. He loved to give kisses. If that did not suit him, I would have named him Happy, or Thumper because he would hear footsteps and his tail would just thump like crazy.

Here are the pictures. He's such a beautiful dog, and very sweet. I hope he can find his forever home!

It was nice to meet him. Atleast these things had shown up before we got too attached to him. I know with pitbulls some will grow up fine with other dogs, but as soon as they hit 2-3 years of age, that dog aggression comes out, and a lot of people become heart broken because of this.

He had the funkiest bark. Actually, it almost sounded as though his voice box was damaged. He was apparently abused because when he approached you, he would hang his head really low and keep it out of your way when you reached for him. But he loved his ears scratched. So I think if he infact was abused, they hit him in the neck, strangled him around the neck, or tension from pulling on a leash (being tied up).

He's a great dog. He'll find a wonderful home. Just no animals, and he'll be great!

He looks like a real sweetie, though I'm sorry to hear it hasn't worked out. Like you said, at least you weren't able to get too attached to Beso before his true nature showed. If I remember correctly, you were going to introduce Beso to your dogs before you brought him home. Did this happen?

Sure did! We brought them with us to the shelter, and introduced Sheiba and him first, and then Denali and Ike. They rode very well in the car, and all of them were fine the night before. They were playing and having a good time. And the next morning, I guess he felt that the Alpha roll was not being held, so he was challenging Ike very badly. He was refusing to let him come into the living room at times. We had to make Beso go lay down. And then all of a sudden, he was fine with them. But then he went after Denali for her chewing on a bottle... and it wasn't "his" or he had it first... He just got up and decided she wasn't allowed to have it. We just did not want to risk it, especially with him being the breed that he is. Never trust a pit not to fight! He would have to always be caged when no one was home, ALWAYS supervised... just wasn't our idea of a life a dog should live (being policed I guess you could say). It would be better off for him in a home where he is the only dog. There was a family the day we went to pick him up, that told the lady at the front counter about one they saw on there that they wanted.. and it was Beso. So maybe they will check back and see that he is there. He'll find a good home. He's a good boy.

We are going down to look again. They have other puppies there... and my mom and I talked it over and we think that if we even find a female then we will be willing to give her a home. There's two females in particular that I was interested in, but just wasn't sure. I think it would be better off getting a female puppy, than an adult/older female. That's why we were aiming for a male because we really were not looking towards puppies, but we think that it may be best to just see whatever pup we like the most... female or male.

BLAH I'm rambling LOL Sorry if that's confusing... or just a pile of sentences put together. Haha... Gotta go! Headin' to go look at some other poochies.
