Bichon and Maltese

You know how some of us get a bit annoyed when someone thinks our dog is another breed?. Like people would think that my sheltie is a miniature collie etc...

Well i think i made a little mistake! LOL. I was at petsmart one day and saw a really cute young white pup. I asked the owner if i could pet it and he said sure. Then i asked " is it a maltese?" he kind of looked at me funny and said " no a Bichon". I was a bit embarrassed because usually i can tell a bichon and a maltese apart, but i guess when they are young & have a "puppy" cut they kind of do look like a maltese, he didn't have an "afro" like the other bichon dogs do. Well at least i apologized, but i felt like an idiot LOL. Unlike some people don't apologize when i say my sheltie is not a Collie!. Although more and more frequently people are starting to ask if he's a sheltie, because his coat is coming in and the "look" that shelties have .

Do other bichon or maltese owner ever had this happend when some one thought your maltese was a bichon or vise versa?

My dad's cousins have a Bischon. And it is often being mistaken for all kinds of breeds. From a Shih Tzu, Maltese, Poodle......you name it, but at least they associate it with a small breed dog, that's something right? LOL
I had a breed misconception a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't usually bother me, but this time it did.
My neighbours daughter had a friend come over. I was standing out in the driveway talking to Steph when the girl was dropped off by her father. PJ and Tysa were standing at the gate waiting for me to go back into the yard. This 12 year old girl got out of the car, immediately looked at PJ and Tysa, and said "Your dogs are scarey, I don't like Pit Bulls, they are mean". My mouth dropped. I commented to her "They aren't Pit Bulls, and most Pit Bulls aren't "mean". She commented right back "Well I don't like Boxers either". I was so proud of Steph right then (she saw the look on my face), and stepped in and said "They are Rottweilers you dummy, and they are GREAT dogs, I just spent half an hour playing with them." "Maybe you should read up on dogs and educate yourself before you comment next time"....YAY STEPH! The girl just looked embarrassed and dumbfounded, but it was left at that and we all went our seperate ways. I was left with the sad thought of yet another child that had been influenced by the media and uneducated people.

ignorant is a bliss ain't it?, as far as pittbull goes, the "mean" ones i have met are the ones that mauled me with their tounges LOL . There is a pittbull in Casey obedience class and he's a sweetheart.

LOL Hey don't feel so bad. I've called an Akita, a Malamute once. After they said it was an Akita I could see it, but well I was a little drunk I guess and it was dark (I was at a night time BBQ). That was years ago and I'm still embarrassed about it to this day.

But Maltese & Bichon Frisé pups look very similar, so it was an easy mistake to make. Much easier than my mix up. D'Oh! LOL

Cass.

Some one did ask if AJ was a Corgie when he was 8 weeks old. He does sorta look like he has Corgie in him..But we thought that was kinda funny.

Speaking from the Bichon point, I don't mind if they mistake Bailey for a poodle--as long as they're saying nice things and treating my girl nicely. And frankly, I've never met a Rottie I didn't like!

A lady came to my door a few weeks ago selling fruit and asked if my Dogue de Bordeaux was a Basset Hound. I simply told her no and sent here on her way. This was after I had sarcastically answered her first question of "Are your parents home." Granted, I look young for my age but I can normally pass for at least 21.

I had a guy who wanted to argue with me about Elite...."what's she mixed with?" he asked...."Nothing, she is a purebred Giant Schnauzer"...."No she isn't! That dog is a mutt!" and he left. Dork.

I have confused the smaller breeds before as well, and yes, it is embarrassing!

LOL I'm always amazed by what people think the Shibas are...it starts off pretty normal and understandable (I guess)

Finnish Spitz
"Husky" (they never say "Siberian")
Spitz-dog
Akita (lol...a little small...but oh well)

and then....
German Shepherd
Corgi
GSD/Corgi Mix
Fox (I get this a lot, but I think if you ever REALLY think about what a fox looks like, you realize they aren't that similar).

and my favorite, from a man out at our beach property:]
"Are those Dingoes? Where did you get a Dingo?"

When I first got Mandi, EVERYONE though she was a bichon....maybe ONE person actually recognized she was a maltese. Don't feel bad!!! It happened all the time (not anymore now that she is grown)!!! I am sure you are not the first or last one to say that!

Exclamation

Finn is lab/golden retriever. He looks more like a golden retriever, and people often say so. I get annoyed when they say he's a lab. It's probably unreasonable, but Finn doesn't look much like one. Culture doesn't hurt. But this really takes the bucket. One day in the street a girl and her father were walking past us and I heard the girl say: "Dad, that's a cocker spaniel, isn't it?"

I just didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
