Unhappy I just got attacked by a Pit Bull!

I can't believe it! I'm shaking so much right now--this jsut happened ten minutes ago!
Well, here I am walking my small Esky mix Cody, normal as any other day. Near the beginning small sprinkles of rain start falling, but stupid me ignores the omen and keeps walking.
Stupid Mistake #2: I start walking down a kind of alley, where there are people's backyards on either side of the path.
Near the end of it, I see a yard with a VERY matted and sorry-lloking chow chow and a young and rambuncious Pit Bull, looking simply delighted about us and his tail wagging. Before I know it, he's crawling over the fence to get to us! Poor thing probably never gets any attention from his family
Anyway, I immediately scoop up Cody, who is GROWLING at this point. The pittie ambles on over and is wagging his tail and sniffing at us. Then, as I'm briskly walking away, the dog begins jumping up on me and taking chunks of fur out of my dog! By now I'm yelling for help and have clamped a hand over Cody's snout to keep him from snarling!
The pit's growing more and more excited, jumping as high as he can, growling, snarling, and biting my arms! And it hurt, too Finally a family stops stops their car and kindly pick me up, and dropping me off at my house The Pit chased after for a while, but eventually got interested in a truck and stopped.
Anyway, now he's loose, my arms have scratches (I think mostly from his claws, but there's a few spots that I know are from his teeth!), and I'm just really upset about the whole thing
Fortunately, no blood was drawn--I don't think he wanted to hurt me, and he only got chunks of fur from my long-haired dog! I also think that maybe he only wanted to play, it's just too bad his idiot owners never taught him to play nice! And I am SO grateful for that kind family that stopped --can you believe a few cars actually drove right past me as I screamed for help?
Anyway, just wanted to vent out my frustration on this whole ordeal. Also,I wanted some advice--was what I did right? Should I have done or not done something that might've prevented this dog from going after us? Should I say something to the "owners"? Thanks!
Now I'm really scared to walk my dog in my own neighborhood How sad is that?

So sorry you went through that. I think if it were me, I'd be calling animal control.... playful or not. I tend to have the thought "If my elderly mom happened to be walking down that such and such a street with her chihuahua, and that same dog did that same thing, would SHE be ok? Would she have gotten away?" I have no tolerance anymore.

Sounds to me like the pup wanted attention. Usually people are told that if a dog is coming after them to stop and stand still....HOWEVER, since you had your hands full with your own dog, and it is obvious that yours was not happy with the pup, getting out of there was your best course of action.

THinking about puppy behavior, maybe this pup had been seperated from its mom too early (who would have taught him that doing that is bad), or that like you said, he didn't get any attention from his owners. Of course, we can speculate all we want, I'm just glad you and Cody made it out ok, and that someone was kind enough to help you out. I would stay away from that ally! (like you didn't know to do that already)

that is just like my sister's pit, but he doesnt jump up and bite people. He will pull chunks of hair out of River and the cats. He can be very rough when he wants and my sister will NOT train him otherwise! it makes me sooo mad when people are irresponsible.

since you are here in texas, i would suggest getting pepper spray and keep it with you at all times. i live near an rv park and a lot of them go walking in my neighborhood, they know my dogs, any way if that is nat an option fill a squrit bottle or squirt gun with water and add about 2 tablespoons of vinager. i have seen the meter readers using a piece of plastic pipe with a tennis ball on it. they get the dog interested in the tennis ball and then they control the situation not the dog.
i live in texas as well, midland texas, unfortantly i live in the county so i don't have animal control, i have to deal with a stupid constable, and i mean stupid.
since you two are not bleeding not much need for 1st aid.
you should however make a report to the authorities.
if you live in the city there is probally a law that has to do with proper containment.
glad you two are alright.

It comes back to the saying
"its not the pttie its the moron holding the leash"
When will people ever learn not to let morons have pitties it is giving them a very undeserved wrap
I am so glad you and your dog are ok. I have to fess i would have reported it and gotten the dog taken away from them to be rehomed.

if you've got the nerve, i'd definitely say something to the owners. i don't know that i would, though. you should also think about calling animal control just to get it recorded that it happened, so if (or when) there's a bigger problem down the line, you've already got a report saying that these people can't contain their dog.

i'm really glad nobody was hurt!!

and carrying pepper spray or citronella spray would be a good plan, too, in case something like that happens again.

please call the authorities and make a report. As the dog gets bigger and older the bites could get harder. What if it was jumping on a small child, it would have been biting them in the face!!!

Get the incident reported.

So glad you both are mostly ok!!!!!
