Letterboxing
For all of you who would like a new hobby, I know, like you have extra time or something, here's one for you.
My husband and I enjoy letterboxing, we take the dogs and we have a good time, and I try and find some when I'm traveling too, although it's been some time since we last went searching... however, I've been recently inspired to plant my first letterbox, and wanted to let you all know!! For those of you that want to know about letterboxing, go here: www.letterboxing.org Letterboxing is like treasure hunting, kind of. People hide/plant boxes, leave clues for others, and other people go about finding them. It has been around in the UK for 100's of years, but just started here in the US about 20 years ago. On the Letterboxing site there are thousands of clues in just about every area of the country, including Canada... Here is the link to my letterbox that I planted. It's also listed on the site, but because of it's nature, I also created a page for it. |

I've never heard of it befor, but of course it only started a yr befor I was born... It sounds very interesting tho. I searched for Idaho and came up with one placed in 2003, I know exactly where(what area) the boxes are placed... The discription of each clue discribed Craters Of The Moon N. Monument. I have passed by there a few times and I know the terrain is "rocky"... Its very interesting, I'm going to look into it a bit more.

When we first started out we just used a store bought stamp, but now we've made one, which has a Weim on it, of course!!! LOL!
All you need to letterbox is a log book (blank white paper), a stamp, and a stamp pad. It's a great, cheap hobby, that the whole family can enjoy. I warn you though, once you start looking for the boxes, you're hooked! |

Novel, you have no idea how happy you just made this girl!
I'd always wanted to get started in geocaching, but didn't have the equipment or the technological aptitude. This looks even better! I can't wait to get started! Will you show us what your stamp looks like? Can you scan some of the stamps you've collected? I'm so intrigued, and just... excited. There are so many in my area- I can't wait! |

ewarp... I will scan in my stamp that I use, and although I would love to show you some of the other stamps I've found, it's kind of bad etiquette.... LOL!
There are a few books available from the library on letterboxing. They have some stamps in there. Some stamps are really neat, because the carvers are awesome. Me, I have a hard time carving, especially when working with such a small medium (I use vinyl erasers, 2" x 1") But, I'll show you what I've got! I'll take the pic and post it later. I've heard of geocaching, but don't know that much about it. I like letterboxing because just about anyone can do it, and the clues themselves are what make it fun. Everybody has their own way of telling you how to find their box. Some clues are simple, "walk 45 paces, turn right, walk 10 paces, look under the fallen log" others are elaborate, like, "divide washington's birth year by the number of children he had, add to that the year's he was president of the US. Walk that many paces at 115 degrees from the starting point to find the washington letterbox." I just made that last one up off the top of my head, but, there are some neat ones like that! BDL- Well, you'll just have to plant some in your area, or get your kids at school interested! That's what's happening in my area. I've been telling everyone I know about this for about two years, and in the last 6 months, over twenty boxes have sprung up in a 30 mile radius! I love it! MrsGrubby - I always find it neat that there are things going on around me that I had no idea about! I think this is a grea couples/family activity. It's cheap to get started with and it doesn't cost you a ton to continue on with. I know there are some groups that actually get together to meet and talk letterboxes. I don't know if I'm to that activity level yet. |

Mrs Grubby,
Each box contains a stamp and each person has a stamp. When you look for a letterbox, you stamp the logbook that is in the letterbox with your stamp to say that you were there, and there is a stamp in the box that you stamp your log book with to say that you found that box. The stamps are secret because they're the proof that you found a particular box. Some are extremely difficult to find, and having the stamp in your log book is a BIG deal!! Each person has a personal stamp, that many keep secret, just because it's your own personal stamp! I'll share with you all, but then, take it back down in a few days, just to keep it personal. |
