Steve, for most of us the tree was the gross part I think, but what we dont' know, which also bothers me, is if the dog was truly harassing livestock. Linnie never mentioned livestock at the house, she just mentioned that this was what she heard sometimes happens.

Maybe the people just killed the dog because it was on their property but wasn't being agressive. I had a neighbor who shot at a dog, and hit it but didn't kill it, just because it was in his yard. The dog wasn't even agressive.

I personally think that is just sick. I understand completely about an animal harrassing livestock. Heck, I get ticked off when another dog harrass my dogs and they aren't my livelyhood. Pretty close, but they don't bring in money. A farmer's livestock does.

In no possible way in hell does a dog deserve to be hung by his legs from a tree left to die!
The first step you take is to shoo the dog away (by firing a gun in the air, whatever) and then contact the owners. If nothing is being done, detain the dog and call the cops. Take the dog to the shelter and make the owners pay to bail it out. Then if something is still not being done and it is causing damage so it is neccessary to kill it, do it humanely! Not by tormenting the dog by hanging it from a tree!

And then what it all comes down to is that the dog wasn't doing anything wrong by what he had been taught. It is the owner's supidity that caused this and the dog didn't deserve to die.

*shakes head* What shocks me is that people will actually do this. Doesn't anybody have any kind of morals anymore?

Steve I fully understand that wild dogs have to be controlled and as I live in grazing country it can be a problem to livestock. What I dont understand is that some one can be so heartless as to tie it up to a tree by its legs.
Also as I stated earlier intact dogs do stray so really the neighbours need to be informed in case it hapens to be one of thiers that has gotten out somehow.
If an animal has to be destroyed I can see no earthy reason why you would exhibit this to the world
i am teaching my grandaughter that all life is sacred i would rather have an overly compassionate girl than a hard hearted one that would accept this easily as a part of life

i have read all these post and have come to one thought.
1. linnie lives in austrailia
2. the majority of us live in the western hemisphere.
3. not everyone has the same customs as the people of global paw.
4. this is not a subject that will be won by either side.

now i agree with steve and linnie about the livestock harasment. and i do find it apalling to do this to any animal. as steve said here in texas, i can shoot a dog on my property that is harasing my livestock, children, or my pets. this does not mean that i will or will not, however if the people who shot the dog want to display the dead dog on a tree on thier property, no matter how sick it is, then they have that right. provided it's not against the law to do so.

this is just my $.02

Just thought I'd add this though:
They may have the right to hang a dead dog by its legs from a tree as a warning, but that doesn't mean it is right.

I think thats pretty sick... I know about the cattle harasment(alot of ranchers and farmers here) but I see no need to hang the dog where people can see... especialy children. No animals, domestic or wild, deserves that treatment. If an animal should be killed it should be done so with respect for that animal and be killed humainly.. Some people.. So sorry you and your granddaughter had to witness that linnie, must of been hard trying to explain that to her.
