Dog Boot recommendations

No I am not insane. I am not talking about the 'designer' dog boots here. Daisy would kill me.

I am taking Daisy with me on a trip to Phoenix, AZ in August, probably the hottest part of the year. It has been recommended to me to get her dog boots to protect her feet from the hot pavement and sand. I am planning to do some hiking in the area and also eating out in restaurants that allow dogs so Daisy is going to be exposed to hot surfaces quite a bit.

I have searched on the web for dog boots. There are ALL KINDS of dog boots. What I need is something that will protect her feet from the heat but won't make her hotter. Alot of the boots I have seen are fleece and that just seems like it would be way to hot in the summer time. What about soles? Leather or rubber?

What kind of boots do real (not fru-fru purse dogs) dogs were in the summer?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Ps: No offense to little glam dogs. Daisy has made it perfectly clear to me that she is not a glam dog. She will allow me to put a pink harness and leash on her but draws the line at bling. I bought her a pink collar with a little bling and within a day she had it off and chewed up. That is the only collar she has done that too. She got her point across.

When I was in Las Vegas, our police dogs wore the kind that were nylon with a leather sole. But if you are going hiking, etc, try the ones with rubber. Just watch her, because a dog does expel some of its heat through their feet. If you are in a shady spot, check the pavement/sand with the back of your hand, if its cool enough, take her boots off so she can "breath".

Another tip: Most boots have velcro fastners at the top....don't get them too tight, or you'll restrict the circulation to her feet.

I thought dogs feet played a part in cooling them down. I was concerned about her wearing something that wouldn't allow her feet to 'sweat' (although it isn't really sweating).

Thanks for the suggestion!

I see nothing wrong with the dog boots. They sure save those pads from burning. I also bought a dog stroller. It's the best investment I've ever made for them and me. Now, no matter how hot it gets, they still go with me. I put a cooling pad inside and off we go. It has cup holders and all. I can take them place that I couldn't if they were walking. I go to malls, all stores and even restaurant's. They stay cool and protected. $89.00 and free shipping.

Hey! That is cool! I will look into that too. Daisy wouldn't mind that.

Thanks!

So you can get into places that normally don't allow dogs if you have him/her confined in a stroller?

I bring along a light weight baby blanket that I just drape over the mesh so no one can see them and get right in the restaurants. They rarely bark, but with the blanket draped over and they can't see out, they never bark.

OMG!!! What cuties you have! One of Daisy's best friends at the dog park is a little Silkie Terrier named Bandito. I bet your little guys love going with you everywhere.

That is really a great idea. Several months back, while I was out walking Daisy, I saw a young woman pulling one of those carts behind her bike. She had her yellow lab in tow. I assumed the dog must have some kind of health issues that prevented him from running along with her. She stopped a passing ice cream truck and bought her dog an ice cream cone. Too sweet.

I do have a basket for Daisy on my bike. She was very good in it. She always sat still and never caused any problems. I wonder if she would do the same in a stroller?

I have two other friends, one with two Maltese and one with two Papillon, who both have these exact doggie strollers and their dogs love them as much as mine do. I think it must give them a little more feeling of security and they can relax and look around at everything while mom is the one walking on hot asphalt with the sun beating down on the ol cranial. While in a restaurant I then give them something "nummy" to chew on. Anyway I say whatever works for you and your pupsters and makes you both safe and happy, then just "do it".

Forgot to say............when I first got Zada I was getting ready to go to the animal expo in LA. and it was HOT!!!! I knew she would be too hot to carry and the asphalt would be too hot for her little feet, so I bought her a wagon and my husband rigged up an umbrella (the ones that attach to the beach chair) and it worked perfectly. I saw people with the larger dogs have boots on them and another with a wagon like ours but no umbrella.
Now we use the wagon to take Delsi (our blind Chihuahua) for walks when we take the two Yorkies, Zada and Azrael. I'm going to buy a bike and a doggie basket for it.
