What breed should I adopt?
Hi, I want to adopt a dog that could go jogging and do agility/obedience work with me. Can anybody suggest a breed that would be compatible? I would, of course, do lots of research before adopting any dog of any breed. I'm looking for a medium to large-sized dog, although extra-large would be okay too. I don't care about shedding and would have the time to groom a long-haired breed. Also, my neighbor has kids (ranging from ages six to twelve) that visit frequently, so I would need a kid-friendly breed. I already have one dog, a chocolate Lab.
I'm looking into Aussies, English Setters, and Shelties. Thanks! -Laura |

Border Collies are really the best at agility usually and the highest on the list of intelligence for dogs. But they're not an easy dog and will take lots of work and training. They do have tons of energy and need a job to do. So if you're a jogger, that might be good. I'd suggest looking into that breed and some others. You can do a search and type in "what dog breed is best for me" There is a site somewhere that can help you narrow it down. Good luck.

Am I confused (probably
) or are you wanting to adopt a purebred adult dog? It sounds like you have lots of time, so I would invest it in raising a puppy. Adopted dogs can be disappointing if you have specific jobs in mind for them. If you have time to raise a puppy there are lots of shepard/collie/lab/whatever mixes that would be happy to learn those things. BTW, no dog is kid proof. Kit |

Neat...I'll consider them as well as the BC. Both sound like great dogs.
I'm looking for a purebred adult, although I would mind a mixed breed or puppy. But I want a general idea as to what kind of dog I should get. I would prefer an adult dog because I would already know their temperament and activity level. I know no dog is kid proof, but I don't want a breed that has been known to be unsuitable for children (generally speaking, of course). My neighbor's kids have been taught to interact appropriately with my chocolate Lab, and their mom and I are always ready to correct them if necessary. I would never expect a dog to tolerate inappropriate, harmful actions from anybody. I'm actually probably not going to adopt this dog until six months to a year from now, because I still have a lot of research to do and I'm one of those people who likes to plan things out way ahead of time. |

My Blue Heeler is excellent with my cats..(small breed and large breed dogs) and he does well with the children around here. He only gets protective if he knows something is wrong. He only wieghs about 40 lbs. And he is about 15-20 inches high. not big at all. He loves to play and he is very obident.
But If you do decide to get a mix-breed, please adopt or rescue.. |
