Dog Facts

I thought it would be nice to have a thread in the forum dedicated to dog facts. Post your dog fact here but make sure it's a real verifiable fact becuase I am sure some of our members will catch it if it is incorrect.

I will start:

The fastest dog, the greyhound, can reach speeds of up to 41.7 miles per hour.

Thumbs up

German Shepherds were orginally breed for herding. Same goes for Rottwiellers.

Doberman Pinschers are the best breed of dog. LOL. (OK....)

Doberman Pinschers are the only breed named after a person. Dobermans have Greyhound as one of the breeds in their make-up.
They were bred specifically to protect their master.

Caucasian Ovcharka's ears are cut into a shepherds crop and there is no flap left over....This is so they blend in with the sheep.

Dogs appeared in the fossil record about 40 million years ago, well before other carnivore families like cats or bears.
The oldest catelike fossils date back 35 million years ago.

Dachshunds were bred to fight badgers in their dens.

Dogs and humans are the only animals with prostates.

Dogs, like people, are either right or left handed.

World's smallest dog is a Yorkie from England, 2 years old, and only 2.5 inches tall by 3.75 inches long. He weighs only four ounces and is the size of a matchbox.

World's heaviest dog is a 3 year old English Mastiff, named Hercules, weighs in at 282 pounds and a paw size of a softball.

The Bulldog has never been officially known as the " English Bulldog". The breed was not originated in England as many still to this day think but is believed to have originated in the British Isles.

A dog's ability to smell can be about 10 million times better than human's.

Two dogs survived the sinking of Titanic.

It is estimated that one million dogs in the United States have been named the primary beneficiary in their owner's will!

Dogs have a visual range of 250 degrees compared to the human range of 180 degrees.

Linnie, here's some more info on the 'Titanic dogs':

The two dogs who survived the sinking of the Titanic were a Pomeranian and a Pekingese. There was also a third dog who survived, a Newfoundland.

The Titanic had dog kennels for the passengers' pets, and a crewman was assigned the task of taking the animals for a walk each day. As the ship sank, one passenger struggling in the water was very surprised when he came face to face with a bulldog. He later discovered that another passenger had gone to the kennels and released the dogs so that they wouldn't be trapped in their cages as the ship went down. Only two dogs survived the sinking. Their owners managed to get them into lifeboats.

Two lapdogs, a Pomeranian owned by Miss Margaret Hays of New York and a Pekingese owned by Henry Sleeper Harper of the publishing family, boarded early lifeboats in the arms of their owners. The boats were so empty that no one complained!

The first officer's large Newfoundland, Rigel, stayed behind with the ship. He was swimming in the icy waters after the sinking, desperate to find his master.

Rigel swam between the lifeboat and the SS Carpathia (the rescue ship), barking continuously. Finally, the Captain heard Rigel and ordered all engines to stop. The dog then guided the lifeboat through the night to safety.

Once on board, Rigel seemed physically unaffected by his ordeal. He stood with paws on the rail barking in futility for his lost master until he was taken below for food and medical attention.

A flea can jump 350 times it's body length, this would be like a human jumping a football field.

The worlds heaviest dog is also the worlds longest dog. In 1989 an Old English Mastiff was documented to weigh 343 pounds and was 8 feet 3 inches from nose to tail.

The wolds tallest dog measured 42 inches at the shoulder and was 238 lbs.

The oldest documented dog was an Austrialian Cattle Dog that was PTS at the age of 29 years 5 months.

My vet said that Abby was right-handed (pawed) because she had worn down her nails on her right side! She really does prefer walking on the right.

I know when I take my dog swimming and throw whatever for her to swim and get, she turns to the left every single time. I have NEVER seen her her turn right, and she's chased a probably thousands of things in the water. On land is different, she goes right and left, but in the water her right side is probably stronger so it pushes her to turn left. Make sense?
