Free???
If your dog had a litter of pups, would you sell them, or would you give them away free, "to a good home"?

LOL! If Cozy had pups, it would be miracle, so I would sell them for a million dollars or so. (She's spayed).
If I had a litter of mixed breed pups, I'd give them away. Puppies are a lot of work. If I had a litter of purebred dogs, I'd sell them. |

IF that every happened to me and I was not planning for it, **I'm going to start breeding when I get my new puppy, after I show him and get all his testing done. My breeder is going to mentor me** I would sell them. Because everyone wants “free” when you sell them you’re going to be getting more of the people who have thought about getting a puppy. JMO

i would never give an animal away free, no matter what. free animals generally dont end up in great places. my puppie would be S/N and taken care of and places in adoptive homes that paid me an adoption fee.
that being said. my dog is neutered. in the future, save show dogs and my breeding prospects, i would neuter them all. |

I would sell them for the going rate. That way only people serious about taking care of them will buy them. People who fight dogs will pick up free puppies to fight or for their fighters to "practice" on

A litter of mixed breed puppies would NEVER happen in my house.. I'd make sure of that. But, let's just say they did.. I would pay to spay and neuter them, and adopt them out afterwards for, say, $50, to help with the costs of spaying and neutering.
I would not ever give away a pup, 'free' puppies and kittens are usually the ones that can wind up in labs. If I bred a litter of purebred puppies, I would price them according to the quality of the sire & dam, their health, achievements and titles, and quality and health of the puppies. |

ChiChi, if you do decide to breed, make sure you're ready to. Breeding puppies is a ton of work. In fact, if you're really serious about breeding, now would be a good time to find a "mentor"--a very reputable show breeder. You can help him/her show their dogs and assist with the litters and find out if breeding really is for you.

Oh Lord, I would lay down my life to protect against mixed breed puppies in my house! (I'm very passionate about dogs and breeding
) But if it did happen, I would spay and neuter the puppies and charge the owners with an adoption fee. If I had a litter of puppies sired by champions and were show PROSPECTS (controversy I won't go into), I would price them according to the standard and temperament and ability to fulfill their original jobs, if they had one. My two cents. |

Always room for one more

I can't believe anyone when even consider breeding...
"The Humane Association of the United States estimates that there are: 6-8 million cats and dogs entering shelters each year. 3-4 million of these animals are euthanized each year. 3-4 million are adopted each year. (only 50% - not very good odds) ONLY 600,000 - 750,000 are reclaimed by their owners (that's just 10% - also not very good) About 25% of the dogs in shelters are purebreds." You'll never see a litter in my house, period, unless it's a pregnant stray or foster. And no way in heck am I allowing people to take my dogs for free. If they can't afford an adoption fee to cover spay/nueter and whatever else, they can't afford vet and proper care for the dog. The dog didn't ask to be brought into the world, so it's our duty to ensure they have the best life possible while they're here. Adding to overpopulation is not doing that. |

ok.. i dont like the 'free to a good home thing'... BUT i must admit.. rocky was a free to a good home dog. a lady came through my line at my last job and told me she had a free pom. rocky is better off with me than he ever was with his old owner.. so this is the ONE AND ONLY time i know of when free was a good thing. as for pups.. well.. my dog is neutered. i dont EVER plan on breeding... i will always have my dogs fixed, it is better for them, and i dont know what i am doing when it comes to breeding, so therefore i wont do it.

well said stardust. I also placed Shiner (former dog of mine) in a wonderful home for no cost. I didn't advertise her as 'free' but when Leliani contacted me, she was such a perfect home that the adoption fee didn't even cross my mind, I was more intent on asking questions and making sure that this was the best possible home for her.
I'd still like to breed a litter. Right now, I certainly wouldn't want to, but in the future it's a definite possibility, but after having a BYBred dog (Poor little Ripley) I don't know if I will ever own a dog 100% worthy of being bred, and if that is the case, then I will never breed a litter. |
