Just venting a little...

Well... Mr. Ikey man decided to take off this morning. He has never done this, but lately he has tried to "sneak out" a couple times. My mom usually lets him ride with her when taking my brother to work. A split second of letting go of his collar in order to get him in and he was gone. We drove all over looking for him. We stopped by his old home, and asked if they had seen him. They said no, but would bring him over if they did. My mom and I left to go to our local shelter and place a "missing dog" report incase anyone took him there. We got about half way there and our friend called us from the house and said the kids had brought him back. He had gone for a swim in the lake -- he was all wet when he got there.

He never started this until the kids he lived with started to come visit him. Their mom said he would run off when the kids left to go to their dads house. But since they haven't been by lately, I think he went to go see if they were at his old house.

So Mr. Man has lost his riding privelege for a while. The rides will altered between Sheiba and Denali.

Bad bad Mr. Ikey man --- Just had to get that off my chest. It's just shocking because this is only the second time. The last time was the same situation. The kids came to visit and then all he wanted to do was get out and run. I'd hate to tell the kids they can't come over to see him because this is what he does. Should I just tell them that since they are visiting him, that he has the urge to find them afterwards and he may get out?

How scary & dangerous! I can imagine what you were going through trying to find him. I bet you are right and it's him trying to find "his kids". It's a tough situation you are in trying to decide if you need to tell the kids they can't visit him because he runs off afterwards. If it were me (softy that I am ) plus the fact that I have a feeling he'd probably take off to just be able to enjoy a refreshing swim (which seemed to be his 1st priority this last time )I would probably still let the kids visit and make sure that he is always on a leash when outside even if it is just to get in the vehicle.

Gosh what a tough situation!!!

It sounds like he has a VERY strong bond with his 'kids' and it would be a pity to break it or discourage it...but you need to think about his safety...

The first time he went swimming too LOL He loves to swim... the kids said he used to swim all the way across the lake (its a good half a mile long) just to chase the ducks

He does have a very strong bond to "his kids". He loves all kids, but he goes crazy when they come over.

I'm a softy too.. so I would have a hard time telling them they couldn't come over. He's always on leash out front, or he's fenced in in the back. The last the kids came to see him was the day before the 4th of July. But this has been the second time when the kids come to see him, he takes off... even if it's been over a week.

So I guess we are just going to have to take a lot of extra precautions for a while if the kids come over. I will let them know that he ends up getting into his "gotta run" mode when they visit, so he gets out and we get concerned for his safety.

We walked back in the door and he comes to us slowly wagging his tail like "I love you guysss " LOL

Sheiba had gotten out one time.. unknowingly when my aunt had left for work. She didn't know either. She was there when my mom left to take my brother, and my aunt left shortly after, so we knew it had to be then. I came hom from school around 2:30 and she's sitting in the front yard... We were SO amazed that she came back to the house and waited for someone to come home. It's a VERY rare thing for a husky!

Are you sure it has to do with the kids and not some other factor/s?

And WOW for him to swim so far!

I'm pretty sure it's the kids. He doesn't do it any other time. Nothing has changed in the household -- everything is the same. Just as soon as the kids come over, he tries his hardest to get out or run off. And of course, since he's a husky, when he has the opportunity to run -- he takes it. So it's not just the kids... getting a good run/swim rewards him.
