What's in a Name...?

Is there a story behind the name you have given your dog(s)?

I've had a few dogs, but I'll just mention my last 4 (pugs). My first pug I named Daphney after the lady on Frasier. I just added the Y to make it a little different. It sounded nice and feminine. I registered her as "Laughing LadyPug's Legacy", - part of it had to do with her pedigree, but the Laughing part was because she sure knew how to make me laugh.

Then Oscar came along. Oscar came from a family in Las Vegas that didn't like him, didn't want him. They kept him outside in a dirt backyard 24/7. They named him Pugsley - they put no thought or love into his name. I never called him that. Thought he deserved better than that. He was a rather stout, slow moving pug - Oscar just seemed to fit. So Oscar he is.

A year after I got Oscar, Daphney was killed by the ex roommates boxers. I moved ASAP. I then wound up with Winston. I've always been a country girl and wanted a western name. Thought about Levi, Ruger, Dusty etc, but after having him for a few days, he really just seemd like a Winston. Kind of a prissy snobby name, which describes him to a T. He is often called Mr. Winston. He is registered as "A Touch of Desert Laughter" in honor of my sweet Daphney.

And then Bentley. As some of you know, I first saw Bentley at the local animal shelter last February. I was 2nd on the list to adopt him, so it didnt happen. Rescue emails me in June, turned out it was the same pug. One family had called him Bo Wrinkle (UGH), the 2nd family kept the name, then the 3rd family called him Danny. Because they thought he looked like Danny Devito. I didn't mind the name, but I kept slipping and calling him Daniel after a thoroughbred horse I had. So decided on Bentley. "He's big...... he's bad.... he's black..... he's BENTLEY!" (and the crowd goes WILD LOL)

That's the basics behind my pugs and their names.

My family's first dog was named Spot... Ahem, no explanation necessary.

Missie's full/registered name is Missie Mae. My dad came up with Missie (it was a cutesey feminine name for a cute little girl pup), I think on the way to pick her up. I spelt it "ie" so it was different, and as I'd just been reading a series of books with a "Missie" in them. I added the Mae (again, spelt that way to be unique), as she needed a longer name for her registration. I got her in May, but I don't remember if that had anything to do with it. Probably so, plus it just fit with Missie.

My next dog(s) will have more unique names, and probably two names to each dog, too. After Missie I started naming each of my pets with two names so the name became more unique to them.

Pugdawg, I've always loved your kid's names. I think they're so suited to them, without being ridiculously original (like Pugsley *gag*).

Cozy Dog Drive-In is a historic Route 66 icon in my hometown. Home of the original corn dog on a stick. Somebody recently asked me if my dog was named for the opera, Cosi Fan Tutti. After a second or two of feeling uncultured, I told the truth. She was named for a corn dog.

Hmmm..... Blackie was named Blackie because he is black. (Imagine that!!) I named Rose Rose because her mother (Brownie) had always went under the rose bush to get on our front porch. (I don't see why she couldn't have taken the steps... lol) I have two favorite names right now. For a male dog it is: Siruis (after my favorite charactor in the Harry Potter books ) or Beau.
For a female dog: Tea`(I think that is just a cute name!)

This has nothing to do with the subject but all of my favorite charactors in books and in movies end up dying or everybody thinks they died. Maybe I should start liking the evil person in the books...

I just start with Mia to make it short. If not I'll be here all night typing.
When I first joined this Board. I was looking for a Doxie. And found this lil'girl. I'm sure some of the older members remember. My name search. LOL. My dh was watching Ferris Buellers Day Off, I had just woke and he said I just saw Mia~Sara. It hit me I said thats her name. I added Princess to it, Because Lundsay loves Princess Diaries (Princess~Mia) thats how we got her registered name. Princess Mia~Sara.

Giselle is French and it supposedly means Promise. The word Promise was so sentimental and symbolically correct (and I love French names), so Giselle it was. Besides, Giselle is the name of a model, and I'd say *my* Giselle is a model, too!

Lucky...I really don't know. I was reading a book at that time and the dog's name was Lucky so....yeap.

Hmm, well all of my dogs were named when I had gotten them.

Sarge fits my boxer/GSD really well though, because he is very protective. He is like drill sargent and will keep people in line if need be! He's a rough and tough boy. I actually have a couple nick names for him, which have a reason. I call him, Buttboy for (a) First day I had him, he bit a little kid on the butt YIKES! and (b) He LOVES to have his butt scratched! And then the notorious, FATBOY! .... when he sits, he has love handles and if he lays on his back, his pudge on the back lays out LOL Now I don't want you all to think he's lethargic! LOL Cause he's actually very healthy.

Sheiba, of course was already named when we had gotten her. Her full name is 'Sheiba Baby', but the ironic thing was that my Golden Retriever/Chow Chow we had just put down, we named Sheiba.

Denali was already named too when we got her. But her name is the name of a mountain in Alaska. I also know that there is an SUV called Denali.

Blackie's middle name is Pig. The reasoning behind that is because he eats and grunts like a pig. (He is also on the chubby side! lol) Rose's middle name is Stinker Pot, because she is a Stinker!! (In attitude and in the way she smells after she is done rolling on dead animals!! lol)

I officially named Boone after one of my favorite movies "Boondock Saints". That's actually is registered name: The Boone Dock Saint. But sometimes I tell people that I named him after Boone's Farm Wine or T. Boone Pickens, if I'm feeling impish. LOL!

Colby Cheesehead-The shelter had originally named her "Cheeshead" (darn Packer fans!), so we added "Colby" so her full named would be "Colby Cheeshead". It was Packers day when the shelter found her.

Mayberry-Wanted a summery name, and thought Mayberry was just so adorable .

Tippy-The tip on the tail is one of the reasons! Tippy is part Border Collie, and she's got the attitude, most of the looks, etc.. Plus I just like the cutesy-ness or whatever of "Tippy". Though I'm not really one for cutey-cutey little names.

I like different names. My neighbors have a poodle/pekingese mix named Fluffy. Fluffy. Sure, the dog is fluffy, but you don't have to name the poor thing that! Old neighbors (moved) have a Bichon Frise named Sammy. Ok, its cute, but how many dogs are named Sammy?? OTHER neighbors have two Cairn Terriers, Casey and Lucky. Both are cute names but I don't know how many animals I have come across/met that are named "Lucky"!

kaiyah got his name from the movie 'Coyote Summer'. The black horse in that movie name was kaiyah. Though spelled differently. i fell in love with the name. I wasnt going to name him Kaiyah but after a few days, the pups spirit matched that of the horse in the movie and so he got his name. Demon, was actually named after demon in the movie 'Snow Dogs'. Both my fiance and I LOVE that movie and we both love huskies. Since i got Demon for him, he got to name him. he adores huskies and of course the one from the movie as well so De got his name! And the funny thing is, the name fits him too!!
