I think we talked about this before. But I get such a charge out of it.
It is soooo cool how you can teach a dog something. I had some little treats in my hand. Lyric tends to back away in preperation for the big event of getting a treat. It is like he's getting all set up to perform something because he knows he will have to in order to get a treat. Last night when I was walking down the hall, Lyric somehow got himself facing me and has a hard time turning around in the narrow space, so he just started backing. I decided to take advantage of that and teach him to back on command. We had tried a little of that by the front door, but never really perfected it. I kind of forgot to keep up on it. So, I right away kept walking toward him, saying "back, back, back." LOL. And he was doing it. Then I made a big fuss and got some treats and did it again. Wah-lah! He got that trick down in all of 2 minutes. He got going faster and faster, like my horses. So, if your dog does something on his own out of the blue and you think it's cute, just praise him and try to get him to do it again, then add a command to it. If you act like it's the greatest thing he ever did, he'll repeat it. I'm going to be using that when he learns how to line dance. LOL. He's also going to have to learn to wear a cowboy hat. Did you ever notice something that your dog did on his own that you would like to have him repeat on command? My girl Chihuahua often rubs her eyes with both paws, kind of cleaning them I guess. She starts above them and brushes downward. I don't make her do it. I probably couldn't. But whenever she does, I'll say, "shame." (not in a shameful tone though.) LOL. (She looks like she's ashamed.) Then I say, "goooood shame" in my best praising voice. So, I'm hoping she'll do it again soon. Everytime I'll say that and pretty soon she'll associate that word with that behavior and do it on command. (I'm not expecting her to catch on as quickly as my Doberman, but she should eventually.) LOL. |

That is too cute! Zermatt learned "Back it up" because his is too big to turn around in small places, also! It is so much fun when they "teach" themselves new tricks! I hope you can get your Chi to do "shame" on command.... that would be really cute!

Zermatt! What a great name. Is it German? It sounds so masculine. He's a big guy all right. So, he's learned to back too. I guess it comes easy to the dogs who don't have much choice in getting out of tight spots. LOL.
I'm trying to make more of a distinction between the hand signal for sit and back because sometimes he's getting confused and sitting. For now I have to really walk back toward him and put my hand more along side him as I direct him back, but later I'll get it more subtle. |

Sarge knows back up already... I think he kinda learned it from when people walk in the door, and everyone always bumps into them and says "BACK UP!" LOL
Denali does the same thing as your chi does... she rubs her face. She'll do it once, and stop, and if I see her, I say "What're you doin?!" in a surprised voice, and she keeps doing it. It's too funny... Denali started digging at the carpet once, to try and get Sheiba's attention, and I thought it was the funniest thing, so I pointed to the ground and would say "Dig Nali, Dig!!" and she caught on in a matter of seconds! Sheiba does this thing when she wants a treat, she will 'scoot' her feet really fast when gets REALLY excited. Kinda like a backwards dig... LOL I think its so funny and I want to try and teach it for a command... needless to say I try it every time and she'll sit there and start barking instead LOL I'm workin on it though! |

Bailey learned the command " I can't reach it" on her own. When we play fetch, sometimes she doesn't bring the ball all the way back. We say "I cant reach it" and we wouldn't go get it. She learned to go get the ball and bring it closer. We started saying that for everything now. My husband lays on the couch and drops the remote. He calls Bailey and points to it and say "I cant reach it Bailey" and she gets it for him. She will get anything for us that we drop on the floor now.

I can tell Boone "let me see your belly" and he'll roll right over. It's probably more the word belly than the rest but its funny. He'd do anything to get a belly rub.
When I had him neutered and went to pick him up and asked for him, the vet tech said "Oh, that's our Belly Man!" Apparently, one of them rubbed his belly once and from then on he'd roll over every time one of them would walk by. LOL! |

kjm-LOL. When I went to pick up Tippy after her spay surgery, they were all like, "Oh yeah, the Miss Whiney..." The vet goes, "She's such a little baby!" I like her that way

Well, how about that? Zermatt, a town in Switzerland. Cool. Yeah...I like that name. That has got to be a beautiful place if it's anything like what I've heard about Switzerland.
Icy, that's cute. They do learn things and we don't even mean to teach them. For that sort of thing, when Lyric or any of the dogs are in the way, I say, "excuse me." LOL. They just move. But I want Lyric to back in a really straight line, just like my horses, so we practice in the hall. LOL. Next we'll work on the side pass and maybe even a leg yield. Totally awesome dressage type stuff. LOL. Yes sireeee...that eye rubbing, face wiping thing looks cute. The scratching: It seems like a lot of little dogs do that thing where they use both front feet and almost look like they're digging. They are speedy Gonzollas and go 60 mph. I would like to get that behavior going more and eventually get Chulita to stand on my back when I lie on the floor. What better back scratcher? LOL Barrett, that's the same trouble my niece has with Eli. She says, "bring it closer." And he does. He tests her though and drops in 50 ft away and would love it if she would get up out of her chair and go get it, which she has sometimes so he can get extra bratty and bark demandingly at her. I wouldn't go for that. I'm too lazy. Kjm, I too can picture Boone communicating that way with the gals in the office. "Hey! Look at me. Look at my belly. Heh-lo-o-ow..... What do we do?" LOL |
