a most depressing few hours :(

I have often read on here how different ones look on the net at rescue sites... So I decided to have a look myself
Wish I hadnt, I just want to go and get them all and love them.
One dog was given to the pound because the owners said it was to old ( 9 years)
I only hope that if they have kids the kids put them in an old folks home
Then I saw another site with heaps of puppies from farms a real pet peeve of mine is the indiscriminate breeding within a farming community and the subsequent unwanted litters that are pts or thrown away.

I saw beautiful purebred rare breeds that have been so neglected you could hardly recognise them
One great looking keeshund ( spelling ) on death row
Although these rescues are wonderful in that they do everything they can to rehome I just cant get past the heartless way everyday humans treat animals.

I dont think I will check anymore sites out or I might end up with 5 acres covered in dogs.

Just had to vent
thanks for listening

I know how you feel Linnie.
I'm one of these people who checks rescue sites all the time (almost daily sometimes) and I do feel awful and want to take all of them home. But I still look..I can't help myself.

Cass.

Rather than sitting there wishing you could take them home to help them, do something! Volunteer to walk dogs or clean cat cages. If you can't get there regularly enough or are physically unable to help, see what else you can do. Maybe you can knit/sew/crochet blankets. Organize toy drives. Raise money. Rather than surfing the web feeling sorry for them, do something! It's overwhelming to see that all these dogs need help, but it doesn't help anyone if you just sit there feeling overwhelmed. Organize a bowling tournament with the proceeds going to the local shelter. Foster for a rescue. Offer to transport animals to and from vets. Grow catnip in your garden for the cats. Bake treats for the dogs. Save aluminum cans and recycle them for money. Offer to do some landscaping for the local shelter. Offer to do home visits.

No matter how much or how little time you have, you can always help. If you spend 20 minutes visiting rescue sites each day, use that time to do something to help them!

Call your local shelters and ask them what they need, and ask if you can help out at least once a week.
Join some Rescues and either foster, transport, do home checks or donate things that they can sell or auction. Get some pictures of their VERY needy dogs that are in serious need of surgery and set up a little table with a BIG jar, with the picture on the jar and extra copies for people to take. Let everyone know that Rescues are none profit and it's donations that help save lives of these poor animals. I did thing outside of a Wal-Mart store and ended up with over $2000.00. (get permission from the manager to set up a table)
I had a garage sale and made over $600.00 for rescue. I sat my big jar and lots of flyers on a little table there too.
Lots and lots of ways you can help out.

I find my self doing that too Linnie, its very heart breaking. But I think I got some Ideas about how to help our local shelter this summer. My brother bakes the best cookies( I mean they are very good) and I make a wonderfull Banana Nut Bread and if we can, when we have our next yard sale I'm going to set up a small table and have a small bake sell, I'll print up some posters with some pictures of the dogs and cats in need. That may help, and maybe have a jar for donations aswell. Thanks for the ideas Calgal and ewarp

I volunteer at the shelter, and in some ways it's even more heart breaking when you know a dog you have been working with is going to be pts because it's been there to long
I just have to hope I helped that dog enjoy his life.
It is so sad.

On another forum I am on, this girl with 2 mastiff/Rotti crosses is going to breed them because, and I quote "Wants a puppy". And from the sounds of things no other dogs are good enough because her two have such great personalities. It makes me so mad and I have exhauseted myself trying to explain things to her, nicely at first, but that is quickly going down hill. She almost makes it seem like what I'm trying to say is all a big joke....

*sigh*

People like this is what makes up the dogs in the animal shelter.

Dogsareme:

I'm on that board too and I have seen that. She also said that if the puppies are returned to her, or not rehomed that they will be PTS, because there's a law that you cannot have more than 3 dogs. Ugh... why even bother? That's extremely selfish. Just because she wants ONE puppy, she's going to risk having those puppies PTS, all because of HER. I just don't get it.

ANYWHO, Linnie, I'm ALWAYS looking at the rescute/shelter websites. It was especially hard when we tried adopting Beso (the pitbull) and seeing him on there for another two months, only to turn around and not see him on there. He was euthanized I agree with everyone else, try doing some things to help raise money or get donations for the dogs that are in need. It can make you feel so good inside knowing that you have done something to help atleast a few dogs.

I always check rescue sites as well, at least once a week.. and it does break my heart to see all the lovely dogs (and cats) who are in rescue. If I could, I would adopt as many dogs as I had room/money for. It isn't fair that they have to live their lives like this. Some dogs have been in pounds nearly all their lives which is really sad, especially when they are about 5 or older. I've also come across a number of beautiful rare breeds.

Ewarp and Calgal I do actually support rescues I just have never allowed myself to get personal as it breaks my heart.
I supply pure wool fabric for doggy jumpers and also arrange money donations and donate some of my arty things to be raffled or sold.
These bring in good money.
As for being able to work at one, even if wanted to its 2 hours drive away so I doubt it would be possible
However I am seriously thinking of ways to make the rescue sites in NSW more user friendly lol.

I agree w/ you linnie, i was once a 'daily' checker too, but it was too hard to watch, I still cant help myself when Danes are posted on the local craigslist, i end up emailing the owners begging them to call me or contact Dane outreach if nothing else.......its so emotionally taxing that i've had to stop myself from even going for awhile.....or i'd end up w/ acres of pups too....
