swimming
Is chlorine bad for dogs? I know you got to be careful of the liner and nails but is there anything else I should know. Kino is forever trying to get in the pool, even if we aren’t in it. He’s been in streams and stuff before and loved it, but im hesitant about the pool, mostly due to chlorine and his white coat and his skin.
Being all white I didn’t know if it was like how some blond humans hair change color cuz of chlorine. Also his skin is pink, rather then the tanish like a lot of dogs too so it seems like it may be more sensitive, my groomer used to show Samoyed's and said they can sunburn very easily, but didn’t say much else. So Id assume other things may be more sensitive to him also..... |

My first pug, Daphney, would dive into my friends swimming pool.. I'd have to be there to haul her back out, she had the swimming ability of a rock lol but chlorine never seemed to bother her. I always rinsed her afterwards with plain water.

As for chlorine, I'm not too sure. I have allergies to chlorine, so my dogs have never been around it. |

Kino wants in the pool
too cute! I suppose he has so much fur he likes being wet and cool...if you dont want him in the chlorine you could buy one of those childrens wading pools...maybe he would go for that? I think if he were to swim in chlorine daily it might tinge his white coat. |

I am not sure if they're more sensative that we are or not. But when I was younger, we belonged to a big private pool/club thing and dogs were often happening in and gave us kids a thrill when they'd hop in and swim.
When I myself became a lifeguard and swim instructor and had to also maintain the condition of the pool, I learned that it's not so much the chlorine, but the combo chlorine and soda ash...(the ph balance) So if your eyes burned, it probably wasn't the chlorine because it dissapates very fast in sunlight and with a lot of splashing, but the soda ash often tends to be too high. Plus the addition of ammonium salts from skin from people who don't take showers first... mixing with the chlorine (or little kids who peed in the pool. LOL. So, I would tend to doubt that it is very bad for dogs. If their mucus membranes in their eyes or nose appear irritated or if they are particularily sneezy, then I'd keep the dog away. It may tend to dry their skin a little bit. (or turn blonds into green heads. LOL) You could check with a vet too to see what his/her opinion is. Carrie |

Jake and Peanut have the river behind our house to swim (and pee
) in. ![]() Winnie, my parents' Springer, has a pool in her backyard, and she loves it!!! She gets rinsed off after swimming, and has never had one skin problem because of it. The pool makes her so happy! Jake and Peanut are not allowed in it. What a little princess! Winnie. Before. ![]() Winnie. After. ![]() |

That would be soo great. Especially with all of Kinos fur, he gets soo hot.
We take him up to Ithaca or Watkins which both have tons of amazing State parks with the prittyest falls and creeks, that all allow dogs. When we go he absolutly loves it, I just wish we could get up there more often. |
