Bailey used to eat grass every day and then get sick. We found out she had food allergies and switched her food and she hasn't touched grass since. I guess the food upset her tummy and the grass helped her feel better.

I've spoken to many vets over the years, and none of them have ever come up with a reason they are willing to stake thier reputation on. The answers on why dogs eat grass vary from, cause they can, missing something in thier diet, settles thier stomach, getting moisture to, just having a salad with dinner. The best theory I heard from a Vet from a teaching college was: Before domestication, the dog ate wild game. Eating an entire animal included the contents of thier stomach. Since most of the animals they ate were herbivores, they recieved that part of thier diet from the stomachs of the animals they ate. But as I said, none of the answers were scientifically proven.

I have always been advised not to let my dogs eat grass. Many times they will do it to make themselves throw up. If your dog is feeling sick it is better to call the vet than to let them eat grass. Also, vomiting can cause dehydration. Another issue is that many lawns are fertalized or have some sort of chemical on them. I don't want those things going into my dog's system. So, I try my best to keep them from eating grass! JMO...

Boone eats grass sometimes and also leaves. He's never thrown up after eating it though, so maybe it was just for the fun of it. I always make sure I know whose lawn it is and what's on it before I let him chew away.

Yes,
Only after we mow though. Alley only eats grass just after it's been mowed. She see's clumps laying around and its it. Our grass is very moist too. Sometimes she will eat the thick grass blades but it isn't an obsessive habbit. ![]() |

Both of our dogs eat grass, but it is only a certian type of weed that they will eat. I don't know why they do and they have never hurt themselves by eating it so I let them.

I sometimes wonder if Sarge is part cow LOL He eats it all the time, whenever hes outside and bored. But he very rarely throws it up...
Sheiba only does it when she has an upset tummy. She almost always throws up after, so when we see her ask to go outside and she's eating grass, we know she isn't feeilng well. Denali very RARELY eats grass. I've only seen her do it a couple of times. I've actually never seen her ever throw up either... |
